Hi all, I'm a regular on many of the other California fishing forums so maybe some of you might recognize my username, and I finally got roped into the kayak hype by a couple of my buddies.

My wife an I are avid anglers, mostly fishing off ou4 18' v-hull fiberglass and on the banks. We have been fishign the Delta and the Bay for many years, and we wanted to give kayakign a try, not just for fishing, but for cruising around and getting some fresh air and exercise.

she wanted a tandem, and I wanted a solo, and we are running out of room in our garage for all of our toys, so I looked into modular kayaks, and found one used that I got for 400 bucks. It will be something we can use in a more casual sense, mostly for taking with us on our 4-wheeling trips through the Sierras during the summers, and some casual outings back home in the Delta and Napa river.

here are a couple pics:

I know, it's not the optimal yak to take on a fishing trip, but like I said, it's going to be used mostly in gentle waters fro cruising around in. I am going to outfit it this week with some rod holders, a crate in the back, and I still need to figure out how to hook up my anchor trolley system in a way that it will work whether I have the kayak in solo and tandem mode. I have some ideas, I'm going to source parts this week and hopefully I can get it out on the water this weekend. I'll post pics as it comes along. I'm looking forward to digging into this forum and learning.

Welcome!  I believe there was a DIY on how to set up the anchor trolley (Tote's wrote up?). I'm guessing from the modular design that that the tail section will always be used, so you can rig just that section. Good luck!

Best way I can think of is to mount it on pulleys between 2 snaps.  Attach a stainless 'pad eye' on the rear section & then one on the middle section & one on the front section in a location such that, when the middle is removed, the snap will reach to the same distance from the adjoining rear section ... if that makes sense.  :smt002  Can also use a short piece of bungee between one pulley & the snap (like 3" or so) to help the tension.

Wow! Thanks everyone for the quick replies and ideas on the anchor trolley. My current idea was to mount each pulley in the stern section, and the bow section, and then making two different length cords the have carabiners on each end. Then, depending on whether i go tandem or solo I can just feed the correct size cord through the pullies, and then just clip the ends to the ring.

As soon as I'm off my phone and back at home on a computer, I will be searching the site for previous write UPS and threads on this. I can tell already by all of the welcomes and replies that this is a forum with a good community of users.

I am also pondering whether to install a ff. The trouble is that the kayak doesn't have a hatch that I can store a battery in. I'm sure a solution will present itself, and if not, its something I can live without. Thanks again everyone.

One last question, if I plan to document my kayak build, would it be preferable to post pictures and updates on this intro oost, or should I start a new one in a different section. Thanks again everyone.

One option on the FF is this:

Let me know if you have questions.

Can also make something quite similar using a small Plano ammo box & a transducer arm by one of the makers such as Mad Frog Liberator or RAM Transducer Arm.

i like the idea of using a dog food container as a storage container. that's pretty smart. i would add a twist to that and drill a small hole through the lid and then the box, and then string some rope through and knot it on the insides. that way you can undo the lid and let it hang down without losing it in the water.

i am still looking at different types of containers, so far that looks like the club house leader!

i dont have a hatch on my yak, so it looks like it will be a little tough mounting accessories, so im guessing i will have to use a rivet gun. is this the optimal way to mount accessories when i dont have access to the inside of the body of the kayak? sorry if this is a redundant question, it's just that my kayak terminology is very minimal, and i am not sure what to input in the search bar to find the proper existing threads.

i am currently making a shopping list and tomorrow i will be buying the trolley kit, anchor, cleats, eyelets and all of the goodies. thansk again everyone!
