Bodega and Tomales Head is very dangerous. You can look at it as you have a way better chance of drowning/capsizing at the Head than being killed or bitten by a Great White Shark. Many times over in fact. The Department of Boating Pamphlet of Tomales Bay said in one year alone 13 boaters lost their lives at the Head of Tomales. That must of been a while back but I think you get the picture VERY DANGEROUS! May all who have drowned their RIP.

The body of the missing man was recovered about 3 miles off Rocky Pt, near Bolinas. The guy who encountered the body and called the CG is a member of another fishing club that I'm in. Very sad situation. And I hadn't even considered the potential affects that could occur when you find something like that. But I hope I never have to experience the feeling first hand. Be safe out there!!

If it's calm on one side of a point it doesn't mean it's calm on the other.
The mouth of Tomales can get ripping at times.
I wasn't there so I don't know what happened,

I've been in and out of there more than a few times years ago while fishing herring. Like Tote, I wasn't there but suspect they got too close to the sand bar jutting out from Dillon Beach. Deeper waters are closer to the west side away from the sand bar. Bodega Head is more dangerous the closer to the island one gets. Deeper and thus safer water is close to the head.

Significant outgoing tide that morning would have set things up for sneakers mid morning, but it sounds like the incident had already happened by that point. Who's to say. Dangerous area even under fair conditions. Unfortunate story.

Seems like every year some fisherman dies off Tamales point, and the story is always the same. Some small craft capsizes and fishermen not wearing PFD drown.
