I have four days off coming up soon and I was thinking of going over to Folsom. My best day would be Monday 10/19 but I am open if someone would like to meet me out there. Let me know here or you can go directly to my email: [email protected].  Looking forward to hearing from you. :fish

I don't know a good place to launch right now without walking a mile to the water. Last year we could drive to the water out of Granite bay. I heard they blocked it off this year. Any other spots allowing drive up to the water launch?

I rode my bike to Beal's Point and shot these pics this morning standing in the parking lot.  Gives you an idea of conditions
pic1- that is the dam on the right.
pic2- dam still on the right, now facing center of the largest part of the lake
pic3- facing North of the main part of the lake

As for access, I put in 2 weeks ago from the Douglas park entrance.  Once in, drive to the boat ramps and go whichever direction you wish.  Dirt roads all over the place let you drive straight up to the water.  The Ranger said each weekend a tow company comes to pull someone out.  The ground is a mixture of sand and granite, so I guess some cars bottom out.  I was fine, 4WD ready, but did not need it.

As for fishing, the main center was 90' deep, side to side.  You can tell this was from back when the lake was constructed.  i saw several bait balls, and bass caught were coughing up smelt.  It was 95F middle of the day when I fished, so bite was terribly slow.  Only bites were opposite side of lake, coming off a large hill that dropped into the waters edge, a nice ledge that wind had pushed all the bait into.  I remain curious if the conditions help or hurt the persistent fisherman  :smt012

If you drive north from the Douglas launch, and paddle north, read this article-- http://bit.ly/1LeYgrL
I will check out the Dam overlook today or tomorrow and see how bad the problem is this week.

My son and I were just at Granite Bay last weekend, on a bike ride) and you can still drive down to the water. We did see quite a few kayakers out there.

I visually checked the American River flow into Folsom lake on Thursday- water was clear, so the silt drainage had settled or never made it to Folsom, I cant confirm. It rained last night, still raining in the hills, which may change things.  One would think the big fish are feeding well on the little fish that have nowhere to escape.  I hope to try this weekend.

Local news this week reported the lake will reach historic lows in 3 weeks if no rain, and drops another 16,000 cubic feet.  This would match the low 1970's.

My boy and I were there today. Granite Bay is the best. Go down to 5% ramp and take a dirt trail to the water. We got withing 25 yards. And the fishing is not bad  :smt002  :smt003

Thanks Marcel. It was a nice day. We landed 4, had 3x as many hook ups, and a few more take downs on top of that. Definitely fun!

Would Folsom be a good place to start for a first timer?

My son (13) enjoys fishing and I trying to support his interests (dad isn't much in the picture) but I am a bit nervous. Just got a tandem kayak (old rental) and we took it out on a maiden voyage yesterday at Lake Natoma (no fishing just getting used to paddling). He is asking me take a rod out next time we go, and wasn't sure if Lake Natoma was a good first (seemed a  bit crowded to me) or if Folsom would be better.

eyecooktoo,

Not sure if you're still looking to fish, but I was thinking about hitting the American tomorrow after a short work day, so afternoon into the evening...

Was going to probably launch at Watt.
