Aloha everyone,

In preparation for the Derby (11/7) Josiah Clark and myself will be hosting a clinic on crabbing safely at Baker Beach on Saturday, October 24th from 9am to noon, weather pending.

We will be going over how to rig your kayak for a surf launch, tips on launching and landing at a beach break, and how to stay safe while crabbing from a kayak.

Hope to see some of you there!

Aloha,

Isao

This sounds like a great opportunity for a crabbing newb like myself to pick up some important tips.  Thanks for putting this together.

I hope I can attend.

Will this be on land or also in the water?
What gear should I bring?

+1 to both questions. I'm a kayak crabbing newb too and this sounds like an awesome opportunity to learn from the experts. Thanks for doing this !

If I am closed by I'll volunteer to film people crashing and buring.  :smt044

This beach is no joke for landing/launching especially with crab gears. A big crab buoy is a must or you will not see it when tide rips.

Hey Gahn and Chattich,

Good questions, we will have one or two of our personal boats set up as a demo, but would recommend bringing your own.

If you are interested the minimum needed to get in the water is a wetsuit and a pfd.

Aloha,

Isao

This is great, thanks guys! Now I just need to try to change my plans for that Saturday :)

Any risk of kayak damage, would it be wise to take my *older* kayak?

not really.  its a sand beach.  you'd more likely lose gear, but not break a kayak.

also, i'm lazy.  I'll only paddle that beach when its pretty much dead calm.  big buoys are a must with that huge current.

We will be launching on a section of beach that is all sand, so there will be more of a risk of getting ejected or pile driven  :smt002

Baker Beach has a shore pound that can be as heavy as any of us want to launch through. Our goal is to share knowledge and techniques so that we can have less yard sales and more people kayaking safely.

We will be going over how to secure your gear to your boat so that in the event of a flip your gear will remain tied to your boat.

The currents here rip! We will be going over the best option for buoys that we have developed over years of crabbing here.

This is our backyard, we crab here often, are good at it, and would like to share some of the lessons and techniques we have learned so more of us can beach launch and crab safely and successfully.

Aloha,

Isao

p.s.

here is a video of Josiah launching at ocean beach on a fun small day

I'm gonna have to try and move some things around so I can get there. Being a total noob, this seems like a golden opportunity to learn from skilled kayak anglers.  Hoping to make it happen!
