Hey guys,

I've been trying to find a good way to train myself to hold my breath longer.  Right now I'm only at 45ish seconds under water while swimming  constant and at a good pace.

Any training advice would help a new diver out a ton!

Bottoms up!

David Laird at Walling Dive Center.
Take his class. You'll be amazed at fast you will improve and how far you'll go.
I took it. Kicking myself in the ass for not doing it years sooner.
Tell him Tote sent ya.

I think there is also a lot to be gained from building aerobic base.  That allows people to gradually accomplish more exertion at lower heart rates.  Jog or bike in heart rate zone 2 (180 minus your age or thereabouts).  It's low and slow, but it can develop your ability to do more with less oxygen . . . .

I'm sure the classes are great, but working out does wonders too. Keep swimming and jogging like Yowlie said.

I will definitely try out a courses when I've got the resources.
I'll start by jogging and swimming, thanks for the advice guys!

Also, I'm starting to do breathing exercises and I'm seeing a lot of improvement!  All these videos  Big Jim and others are posting is really cranking up my motivation to improve my dive time!

Till next time,

Cheers!

Lol! Montana, sitting by myself all day gives me enough practice! I'm already up to 2 minutes dry holding!

Very excited,

Cheers!

You need to blow your heart rate up in training outside of the water.  I mountain bike quite a bit and it does wonders for my breath hold (and I'm only able to get to the water once a month).  You need to do training that JACKS your heart rate.  Jogging, biking or swimming at a steady, even clip is great for heart health, but does nothing for endurance.  Do hard sprints, rest, do again and again.

Got it thanks for the tip NorcalNeill,  sounds like I need to be doing HIIT for my cardio training.

A few years, well actually many years ago I built up underwater breath time by practicing holding my breath while walking. A minute of walking while not breathing would equal more than a minute underwater time as long as the dive was in controlled relaxation mode. Biking and wind sprints are all good for core endurance but the body needs to be trained to use the oxygen effectively without replenishment during a dive. Hard aerobic sports mostly make the body more effective in using a constant stream of incoming oxygen.
