A local (Pacific Grove) group is threatening to propose a kayak and SUP ban within the Sanctuary because kayakers are getting too close and "harassing" otters. This is mostly caused by stupid tourists in rental kayaks, but could potentially impact us. So I just wanted to spread the word. Please watch the video and always stay far away (at least 100ft) from otters while out angling.

Thanks!
Jason

Oh gawd....

Yeah, the tourists are getting too close... but ban kayaks? How bout a public awareness campaign and enforcement of existing regulations?  Shit, it's in the best interest of EVERYONE in Monterey to let the otters hang out and proliferate.

It's funny how I have never seen a video that gives an honest account of otter behavior. Aside from cutely smashing invertebrates with rocks, curling up in kelp and incessant cleaning, male sea otters also enjoy infanticide, and raping juvenile seals... to death.

LOL, they sound like wolves Archie!

I think we need a war on US soil, and 85% of the population needs to perish. The remaining 15% can rebuild the country, without unions......

We encountered some activists @ Moss Landing last year taking pictures from the jetty of boats passing in/out of the harbor entrance.  We were approached by anti-activists to forewarn us of the activists presence.   The activists were taking pictures in an effort to show that passing boats are too close to the sea otters and the harbor entrance should be closed down anytime there are sea otters in the area ... WTF!?!?  :smt013  Basically, if a sea otter were anywhere in the entrance, a boat (in the activists eyes) should not be able to enter. :smt011

The anti-activist was there to warn us of the activist photo efforts.  We looked back & saw them sitting on the rocks of the jetty with their zoom lenses & binocs.

Start corkin rounds at the otters, not to hit them, just get close. And watch those activists SHART themselves. You will go to jail, but with the price of food and rent, three hots and a cot, toss in the entertainment value and instant legend status, it would be worth it.  :cowboy_smoke: :smt097

.....or we could just go with the public awareness campaign, not ban kayaks and cancel the nuclear holocaust.

Just watched the video - what a joke that proves just the opposite.  Let the animal behavior tell the story. Other than the one case where the kayakers chased the otter in open water, all the other otters are obviously habituated to having humans around in kayaks.  As said previously, a little public awareness is all that is needed.  All the real challenging problems that deserve attention and we get this drivel.
