OC definitely seems sharky was out there wed. No seals. Glad you are ok. Im sure it was a whale... In my opinion when a gws decides to go for it, it has nothing to lose. But i will say that being hit from behind is def suspect as i read a story on the shark attack log site of a woman being stalked on a paddleboard for over a hr last month down by SB. No matter which way she turned the shark always stayed behind her... Crazy. Fog even makes it spookier.

Did anyone actually see a whale or large pinniped on Saturday or Sunday? I didn't. From what I am seeing, the behavior (multiple boils/stalking or playing) seems most likely a shark or pinniped. If it had been an orca we probably would have seen it.  Filter feeding whales aren't really known to stalk/play with kayaks.

I think a lot of seals are hauled out at the Russian awaiting fine dining.

And just how do YOU know it couldn't? If you would have seen the big bull seal that swam up from where I could clearly see it( the viz was 40 ft that day) at a rate of speed that was amazing and hit my kayak from below I would have been ass over tea kettle buddy.

Didn't see any whales but I had a large boil right next to me and didn't see anything appear.  Just like you and Rob.  Thought it was just a sea lion that didn't break surface at the time but ????

Whatever it was but looking at Gary face when we get there, I was done for that day...  It was so unreal...
We all looked around & kept eyes out but didn't see anything. so creepy...
Again so glad that you're okay, Gary.

Good to know you're OK Gary.  The way you described your episode it doesn't sound like a shark.

Back in August me and 2 other buddies were fishing Carmel Bay.  Lots of whales making swirls, breathing and feeding around us.

One came up for a  breath and then arched his back less than 20 feet from me.  There was nothing I could do but watch.  My best recourse was go backwards but Hobie drives don't do that.

Just because there weren't any scrapes, doesn't rule out GWS.
Go look at video footage of GWS breaching on seals or the seal-silhouettes towed behind boats...it appears as if the shark misses the target 10-30% of the time...and simply tosses the seal into the air, disorienting it. They aren't the smartest animals.

Way to stay focused and getting out of water..
As long as we allow these unprovoked attacks to go unanswered, they are bound to continue.
We need to shank a few of these bitches to get some respect...

I wanted to give kudos to the two yakkers that got to Gary first.  I know they're NCKAers because we chatted briefly before Ghan's incident.  I just can't recall their names.

As soon as the call came over the radio, I pulled my line in and started moving south to the Cove.  I saw those 2 gents already making a bee line to Ghan's location, and they were communicating all the way in.  They even flagged down a SOB in an inflatable that gave some lame excuse about engine problems... then sped away to go fishing... f'ing bastard.

Anyway, they got to Ghan before Uminchu Naoaki and I pulled up.  Being the beast that he is, Gary said he was OK and maybe we should all just continue fishing.  Reasoning prevailed and it was decided to head to shore to check the Revo's hull before we talked about fishing.  We started to convoy back with Dray joining the armada.  Definitely felt more comfortable traveling in a pack back to shore.

I'm just so thankful it was not more serious.  I'm so impressed with Gary for keeping his head, self rescuing & collecting his own gear, alerting others about the danger, and with all the NCKA members for responding the way they did.  It makes me humbled to be associated with this fine group, and I definitely feel safer on the water knowing that we take care of each other out there.

But, fuck those assholes in the inflatable... seriously.  KUDOS to NCKA for doing it right.
