As some of you might be aware of my garage door opener crap out on me.

Fast forward to last Wednesday 23rd I call these guys cause on yelp they had a decent review so I called them figuring that a simple install would not get complicated.

So I get home its a freaking hack job that look like something I paid some guy I met in the parking lot somewhere.

So as you guys can see to run the rail and chain the guy hacks into the rafter.a 2x6 which now only has 2 1/4" left of wood.then on top off that the guy simply hacks the wires to the sensors and doesn't even bother to put any tape on it.

I call them back and at first the guy played like he was concerned then calls me back and says he talked to his partner and that he said it was already cut from the previous install.

So when I got home I took pics and sent it to him.anyways short story long I told him to come take his crap and give me my money back.he said no the job is done.he asked if I have previous pics before the install, I said why the hell would I have taken a before pic.if I knew this would have happen I would not have called them.

So he txt me and says that he wants to bring the old one and put it up to compare.I said go ahead and bring it he says hell call me on Sunday to come by.he calls me this morning and says his guy is out of town and cannot come by.I say to him just come by and look ay the dam beam and you can see where the wood is freshly cut.he says no he wants to come with his guy with the old unit at a later time down the week.
I told him I dont have a set schedule so it has to be on the weekend. So I say again just come and look at the dam beam.so we go back and forth and I get pissed off and I tell him ill see him in small claims.

Well you guys can see for yourselves in this day and age I figure I go with a smaller company so you get better customer service was I ever wrong.and dont believe the reviews on yelp thats where I made the mistake
My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it

I'm almost certain that I could have done a better job, and I've never installed a garage door in my life. That sucks. Hope that you get some kind of quick resolution to this.

This is why I'm reluctant to hire anybody to do any work on my house. As a result, I either do it myself, or it doesn't get done. So, during fishing season(s), nothing gets done...
I don't like stuff that sucks.

looks like their tool kit consisted of a hatchet and a big rock. Yikes.

I'd call the building inspector. You may not need a permit for the install but they definitely violated the building code by cutting into that joist.

Even if some of that rafter was cut away previously the installer should have addressed it since the track they were installing is now penetrating through a structural beam. Hope you get this resolved Vince.

That does look bad. Is just one collar tie (those aren't really joists or beams in this case) notched or several?

Those aren't bearing weight, they are under tension, resisting the downward pressure of the roof load on the pitch angle which would force the walls outward without it.

If it is just one, you can probably add one just above that and have full structural integrity.

I would not call a building inspector at this point. More pictures with a larger scope would help determining the scope if your problem.

If  your garage door company is licensed  Contractors bond will fork over $$$$ get engineer to say its structurally unstable and then pics of before and after they installed. If your member was cut before they installed you are probably screwed.

Small claims after a new estimate by legitimate big, expensive contractor.

Need some Baitman advice here, I think.......

I'm not sure what I'm seeing in the pic, but it looks like some metal support has been added above the cut, Just wondering about that.

The metal support was added by the original installer of the unit that was replace, the job was done properly by a pro.it was a genie screw drive unit and the installer notch the beam about 1/2 " into it for the rail so he put in the added support.this was done by the old residents.the old unit sat flush to the bottom of the beam where it's notch so the installer added the metal brace.

The old unit when you looked at it you can tell it was installed by professionals

I've been a structural Contractor for over 30 yrs. All contractors are required to be bonded. You can find their Bonding info at the CSLB website. Performance bonds are not insurance but a guarantee. File this complaint with their bonding company and they are required by law to pay for the proper repairs. If they are not bonded, then they will not stand a chance in small claims.
