POSTED BY GORDON:

For those of you who like to fish freshwater, Bass-n-Tubes has a complete tourney season (actually 4 different regions -- Travelers, Delta, Shasta, & Central), complete with Angler-of-the-Year and Tournament of Champions at the end of the season.  Most contestants fish out of kickboats (there are a few hard core tubers) but yaks are allowed.  Target is black bass (largemouth, smallmouth, or spotted).  Entry is usually $20 + $5 big fish option.  One caveat -- catch must be kept alive for weigh-in.  I use a homemade livewell; others use mesh or wire bags.  I expect to see a few of you out there next year!  (Mooch, MolBasser, etc.)

"BNT 2007 Travelers Region Schedule"
February 24-25 Nacimiento
March 24-25 Berryessa
April 15 Contra Loma
May 19-20 Clear Lake open
June 10 Middle River
July 21-22 Delta Open
August 18 Rancho Seco (Night)
September 16 Old River w/ Delta Region

Hey Mooch,

Have you ever tried putting a stringer through the lip and out the soft skin on the lower jaw of a bass? They tollerate it very well and will stay alive all day no problem. Not much worse than one of the 5/0 worm hooks we stick in em. Keep it out of their gills and they'll swim off just fine, even after being towed around all day... Tourny sounds like fun tho...

Yes, I have done that in the past - and you're right, they do stay alive all day. I wonder if they (Tournament Directors) allow us to do that  :smt017

A 5/0 hook will do harm for a very short period of time only. But a stringer on the fish all day will sure cause an infection on the lip of the fish. I would not do this if I were to release the fish.

I heard that mortallity of the turnament caught bass is much higher that regualr catch and release in anycase. I don't remember where I read about this bit of info.

I'm guessing "catch and release" is much different than "catch, weigh, cull, stow, official weigh in, glory photo, and release".

It does not make sense that the turnament rules alow you to keep the fish after weight in. If that's the case you could wipe out a lake in one day. At least the little lakes here in the South Bay would not fair very well at all. The culling rule is allowed in turnaments because they are catch and release. Otherwise DFG would not permit it.

FisHunter,
I have seen some of your underwater shots and they are awesome. You must have to take may shots until you get a good one. Do you ever lose fish while you are trying to take a good shot? What camera do you use and how much does that set you back?

I have shot way more bad ones than good ones.
I dont what to HiJack this thread.....but I am a "new" owner of the Pentex Optio W20. I just got it in Nov. Circut City online $260.00 everything you need but the *memory card* $30-60
Check out "Gearing up"  ~Optio W20 feedback  / ~disposable underwater camera(old shots) in the forum and there are some others that had input on the Mem-card sizes

I have some older shots in my Gallery(Adam Coca) from "disposable underH2o cameras" you can tell the difference big-time in clarity.
