Happened to me yesterday diving Noyo Harbor and the time before that diving....... at Noyo Harbor.
I'm susceptible to it when I dive but I always take something for it and don't have a problem.
Took something the last two times diving Noyo, and paid special attention to taking it before yesterday's dive. Took it the night before, when I woke up and then again before the dive (a 6 hour gap).
Three factors that remained the same both times I got sick:

1) McDonalds sausage McMuffin
2) Hwy 20 from Willits to Ft Bragg

and the one that I think makes the real difference

3)Sleep deprivation.

Doing a drive and dive, especially one that is a minimum of 5 hours away takes it's toll.
By the end of a long work week I'm already wiped out. But packing after work on Friday, then getting up at 2:30AM Saturday morning to get there by 8:30AM then get right to unpacking, donning all the gear and getting to the dive spot takes it's toll on the body.
And it's not like I get a great nights sleep before the dive day either.
When I camp and dive the next day I've never had a problem. It's always been on a dirve and dive (3 times now), one was with Big Jim, Batt and Jesse, at TC and the other 2 with Cabeza de Martillo and DG at Noyo.
Can anyone else chime in about their seasickness compared with being well rested and with being sleep deprived?
I'm looking for a solution.

In 30 years I have never been sick diving, with the exception of once in Jamaica. That was my own doing and I should not have been in the water that day. I have never done an all nighter and dove before like your trips though. It seems weird that you took meds twice and still got sick. I would bet on the sleep thing. I have made several all nighters to races and feel like crap when I get to the destination. Almost like it is motion sickness.Get the shakes etc. Sac to Phoenix or Vegas is a killer driving all night long and then trying to perform.

Sleep deprivation without a doubt contributes. No question, hands down, case closed.

I don't dive but this weekend I got sick as well and that don't really happen when i'm out fishing. 2 things I did prior and not this trip was:

1. taking my 2 motion pills when I woke up at 3:30 versus before I took it at 8pm before bed.
2. I couldn't sleep all night because I drank my pre-workout drinks and kept me awake all night. eyes were closed but can't get a deep sleep. keeps waking up.

my buddy was worse. no sleep and no pills. he was already chumming way before he got in the water.

So I believe 1 and 2 above is the main contributor.

Hi Tote. Glad to see you diving. I think everyone got sick this weekend. Recovering from a sinus issue so went up to the mountains instead. I used to get really sick every time  before getting a prescription of scope.  I take one when I wake and one before I dive. No alchohol . Plenty of water the night before. Sleep is a must and no greasy foods until after the dive. Haven't had too much issue lately but if its a mixed swell and I'm diving shallow I still feel it.

Sleep deprivation combined with a near lethal dose of whiskey and dark beer the night prior, coupled with the Albion washing machine= :puke:

Yes, lack of sleep for sure is a huge factor. Greasy food is too.

hi there.

i asked about seasickness recently, and had a few helpful threads posted. check out this thread, and the links within it. good stuff.

Yes lots of good info there.

But Tote is just trying to figure out another reason why he gets sick each time I go diving with him. Once from shore and once in a kayak.  He was sick both times so that's not it.  Small kiddie waves so that can't be it.  He drives long distances before to other locations so that can't be it.  Has to be sleep related because after he gets sick he goes back to the truck and sleeps.

I don't eat prior to diving because I don't want to burn the energy to process it or burp up food during the dive.  Or have to take a dump. I know greasy food affects me but I have only been sick on the water once and I am grateful I don't have to deal with it.

On boats I get seasick if I drive to shelter cove nonstop all night then go fishing. Puke my guts out. Rested up I get sick about half the time.

I like my sleep, so 5 hrs usually isn't enough for me.

I usually take a dramamine the night before to help me sleep as well as have some meds in my system, then I take a half a pill before I dive.

The only sheep that were out were the ones he was counting before passing out in his truck AGAIN!

Contributing factor #4. Having to listen to Antonio piss and moan from Vallejo to there and back. Enough to nauseate anyone.

When you are on a boat you avoid hearing puking, or seeing it or smelling it. Doesn't apply to you. Having your morning poop is very important. For me, eating a little food is very important too. Just a few handfulls of peanuts or some crackers. Looking at something close like a tangled line could get me too. This is coming from a guy that got sick a couple dozen times in the Puget Sound (it's like a big lake).
