Hi guys, I just came across this.

I'm already behind with projects from my show earlier this season, so with the exception of the 2015 AOTY/DOTY awards I have to "just say no" of taking on any additional work this year.

I'll take on the mantle of making these awards.  Here's my draft mockup of the 2016 O'AOTY awards.  Please do note the actual awards will be significantly lesser quality and will be completed in crayon on cutting board.

If you go back to the rules of that time as well, then I'd most certainly be down.  OG's whom fished the original AOTY should serve on the committee.

Here is your list of potential O'AOTY committee candidates (those who caught all 10 in a single year 2007-2009)

ChuckE
Holy Toledo
otobepelagic
scwafish
Mako1
Uminchu

Are scwafish and Mako1 still active?

those rules are there for a reason.  so stick with the current rules.  the original 10 fish aren't that difficult to accomplish, with the possible exception of sturgeon.  that's because all salmon species and all trout species counted.

Yes, I would.

I love the idea of an easy going competition, however there have been individuals in the past who grief other competitors over there submissions. As far as I can tell, holding high photo standards has placed any conflict between competitor and committee instead of between competitors (which I think is preferable).

All it takes is for a FNG to get in the top 5 with some crappy pics of big fish, and the griefers will come out of the woodwork.

I dunno, is abandoning the hard rules worth it considering the likely result?  To my knowledge there haven't been as many AOTY inter-competitor beefs recently.
I'm not going to compare the rules one by one, but the measuring rule is just one of them.  But personally if someone couldn't follow the original rules and not purposely try and gain an advantage over other anglers by skewing their results, then I don't want to participate.  It's that simple to me.  If I have doubt about my fellow competitors, then it becomes a finger pointing game and i'm not interested.

Al,

I don't want to stir any pot at all, just honestly curious...what rules were different besides the measurement rule (rule #3) and the species?

All the rest of the 12 rules seem pretty straightforward to me, but I could be missing something?

The info beneath the scoring scale is what I am most stoked on about "todays" AOTY/DOTY...but those aren't really rules...just more prize possibilities and more $$ going to PIF.

This rule wasn't true back then:

7. Only fish that you can normally keep and eat (per CA DFG regulations) are eligible.

Also, this rule was implied but not explicit:
"fish caught from waterways with restricted access to the public, such as members-only or private waterways or aquaculture operations are not allowed. "
Other than that I think the rest were the same.

Back then, the community was much smaller and tighter. Since everybody knew each other, we trusted the results & measurements were legit / unquestioned. And that's what makes it fun! [competing against your close friends; just like fantasy football...half the fun is talking smack, but it isn't fun when you don't know the other participants] Once you start introducing more people, it's hard to keep up with all the participants. So, when some random unknown person posts a questionable fish or talks smack--it is often interpreted or perceived differently.

As for the actual idea of tracking AOTY competitors' attempt to conquer the Original 10 Species, that is pretty simple. I can post a running list of O10 AOTY results and update it each month. We don't need a whole new board for it. I can simply tabulate results manually.
