Jan and I have  routine for putting our two parakeets to bed. They get carried or fly to the cage, get some snacks, a drink of water, and get tucked in, it gives us chance to check up on them.  They are bonded pair. Azure & Miss Uma Boshi, Miss Uma Boshi had been diagnosed with liver disease, and there wasn't a lot we could do for her, other than give her "a lot of greens"  which we did.  She was a happy, bossy little thing. She flew around all day, and last night she was sluggish and puffed out, not good signs for a little keet.  We were planning for another vet trip, when we got up she was in really bad shape. Jan got the transport/hospital cage, as we were planning to take her tot he nearest vet as soon as possible, we didn't think we had much time for her. Shortly after being placed in the cage she passed.  She had a good life, and now "Zure" is widower again. This is going to make his "E Parakeet.com" profile a lot tougher.

We know what will happen in the near future, he will go into a state of depression that makes humans seem mild in comparison. We are already talking about finding another keet for him, and had planned on extending our flock to four birds, as parakeets are really social birds.

Bummer. Whether a cat or dog or bird or turtle, losing a family pet is rough. Condolences.

Definitely get another 'keet though. I've seen too many instances where one in a bonded pair passes and the other goes downhill quickly. As  you said, they're super social and the sudden loss of companionship can be devastating.

Thanks guys!  We were on Mickaboo recently looking for another pair.  We found one that was a real character and we think she may be a good match for him. Her foster mom had a short video posted.  She isn't bonded, which at the time we were looking, made us worried.  We hoping to find a second bonded pair for Miss B and Zure to play with.

It's never easy to lose a piece of your life.  More 'keets is a nice idea to keep everyone happy.

I know for the hard core dog and cat owners, birds may not seem like a big deal, but they are their own little characters.  Some are little explores, or singers, or do crazy little things like hang upside down and down.  They can really get to you with the fun things they do.
