Hi,

I got a Kayak, fishing rod and SUV to carry it all.  Time for some fishing around the North bay area.  I've been at Spring Lake but didn't catch anything.  I did paddle around the Russian river near Jenner but didn't catch any thing their either.  :)  Where do I go next.  :)

Roll up and fish Lake Mendocino!  Both boat ramps are now closed to power boats and the bite is really heating up.  Lemme know and we'll get on some large and smallmouth bass, crappie and maybe a striper if we're lucky!

Welcome
where to fish? Sonoma coast but first learn to paddle and get the proper gear.
learn to re enter the kayak, wear a wet suit, get a VHF floating radio, wear a pfd, keep on reading some of the conversations here and learn. you came to the right place to learn.

Try evenings at lake Nagasawa in santa rosa. russian river for smallmouth. Petaluma/Napa  river for striper. Tomales bay for halibut. lake Sonoma is only a short run up the 101.it can be great! you have soooo many options here.    bogeda harbor is another. lots of fairly easy places you could go just look for the hook ups and get yourself there.

Thanks for the welcome and advice!
Mendocino look like fun maybe I'll try that tomorrow if wife doesn't feel like going to the ocean.
Spring Lake has been bad to me I've tried it off and on the last two years I've lived here in SR and never even had a bite.  Which is sad since I live like 1 mile from the lake would be nice to have a fishing spot I can go to after work.
I always wear my PFD even when I tried fishing Healdsburg Veterans Memorial Beach which this year is like 6 inches deep.  I'm not a small person so I was always scrapping bottom.  :)  I don't think I'll try the open ocean unless I get more experience and a VHF.

I'll have to try  lake Nagasawa during the week since I work near there.  I'll just bring my kayak with me to work.  Those other location also look great.

I fish springlake a few times a week since I live just a mile away as well.  Once you learn that lake it does have some of the best bass fishing in the area.  If you want to hook up soon I can see show you how to get on some big fish in that lake.

I tried Mendocino on Monday, I didn't realize there was a big drop off and I flipped the kayak.  Of course I had my cell phone in my pocket.  My poor Chiwawa was trap under the kayak.  I flipped the kayak back up and put my cell phone and keys on the shore.  When I turn back to the kayak was floating off to the middle of the lake with my poor Chiwawa trapped on top of it.  Had to swim out to get it and then my dog refused to try again.  I did manage to launch a second time without the dog.  I paddled around until sunset but didn't get a bite.  I did see some fish jump so I think I was getting closer.  I didn't realize until now but i believe Mendocino Lake allows night fishing, I would have stayed longer if I had known that.
Cell phone is ok since it's a Sony Z3 which is water proof.

Welcome! Sounds like an exciting Mendocino trip, too bad it was in a bad way! There are lots of great places to kayak fish around here, keep your eyes open for a hook up or pm one of us who are local to do some fishing.

Don't worry, it gets easier after 5 or 6 years. At least that's what I'm told...
