Hi folks!

A good friend of mine has invigorated me to get fishing more, mainly after a excellent trip to Ocean Cove a month or so ago. My wife and I stuck to the shore poke holing while my friend went out on his 'yak and while I didn't catch much (a small-ish greenling and some itty bitty monkeyface eels) as compared to my friend (4-5 huge rockfish and a monster lingcod), I had an awesome time.

I used to go fishing a lot with my dad, but between chasing girls, moving out and my dad slowing down I hadn't gone in a long time until my wife's family introduced me to poke holing for monkeyface eel which seemed like magic. I had forgotten how enjoyable fishing can be even if you're not catching anything.

I'm considering getting a kayak, though honestly I'm dreading putting a bunch of money into another hobby when I could just as easily be spending it on the house or something else more "necessary". Yak or not I want to get fishing more and it's great to hear from other local fishermen.

Welcome to NCKA. There are quite a few of us in the East Bay. Chances are good you may have see me putting around town with a  yellow kayak on top of my car. Maybe I will see you on the shore one of these days.

Welcome.

Trust me, nobody around here spends a lot of money on their kayak(s) and gear...

OK, that's a BIG lie, but it is possible to get out there on a decent kayak and catch plenty of rockfish, lingcod, etc., without spending a lot of money.
Are you pondering what I’m pondering?

It's awesome to see another local on here. Do you know of any good nearby places to take the kayak out closer than the coast? While the drive to the coast is manageable, I'm hoping to find places that I could get to after a talking a half day at work and be home later that day.

What do you guys think of the lifetime tamarak angler? I'd be wanting to take it to places like Ocean Cove https://www.lifetime.com/gallery/water-sports/fishing-kayaks/tamarack-angler-kayak/90237. The local Big 5 has them on sale.

Also, as long as I've been "fishing" to be perfectly honest I only barely know what I'm doing. I know the basics but if you handed me a fully stocked tackle box, I wouldn't know what to use for what situation. Any pointers on where to look (books, websites) to learn the more "tactical" side of fishing would be awesome.

There are lots of places to fish nearby. McAvoy harbor on the delta is 10 minutes away, Lafayette reservoir is 20 minutes away, San Pablo reservoir is 25 minutes away, and Berkeley marina is 30 minutes away.

I have never paddled the Lifetime Tamarak. But I have an older Tarpon 140, the one with the Tupperware hatches that I am selling for $300. If you like, I can bring it to one of those places mentioned above for you to try it out.

There is a lot of good info on catching fish on this site. Or you can do what I did and go out with more experienced anglers and learn from them.

Sorry, but I will be out of town this weekend. I will have it in San Diego if you want to paddle it.

Krusty, awesome! I sent you a PM/email about the tarpon. I'm available today in Concord to check it out if you're around.
