Has anyone here fished Lake Isabella, in the southern sierras?  I know there's not much water left in the lake but I figured I'd ask what I could expect. An overlanding adventure/labor day weekend getaway has us in the Kern river valley area.  We'll also be down in the Mojave but I know there's no water there.

Use to go there a few decades ago, back in my windsurf days; wind use to crank thru the hills!!!

Where do you plan on camping? there "were" some developed sites on the northwest side of the lake, but I never stayed there; we use to go primative and camp right on the shore of the lake and it could be a hike up to the bathroom/portapotie...

From shore, fishing sucked due to all the swimmers, boaters and windsurfers; but as dusk came in, trout fishing picked up. We use to just thru a line out (with a bell on the tip) just before we went to bed and we'd have fresh trout for breakfast!

If you want bass, you have to go the east side, where the underwater trees are; by now, they might be fully exposed...

Would love to hear you report when you get back; that was a fun lake, back in the days!!!

oh yeah, one more thing:

The streams before you get to the lake (if there still in water) also held good size trout! silver/blue castmasters or panthermartins

Thanks for all the good tips.  The lake is low, and by that I mean closing in on 10% of overall capacity, and reduced down to 2sq miles.  Makes me think that there may be a lot of fish in that small area.  We're camping at paradise cove which is close to the dam, so I'll try for some crappie.  We'll also be going up towards the sequoias and what not so I may look for some deep, still, pools on the Kern River.

The Kern River near Isabella had some good trout fishing when I hit it in the past. They were planters and all the usual stuff worked (Panther martins, rooster tails, trout crack...).

Haven't fished the lake itself, but I have no reason to think soaking power bait in the early morning or evening wouldn't work.
