If I buy an Iron for lings the first thing I do is take the treble hook off and add a Owner Dancing Stinger Hooks to the top. I do this because I feel I have less of a chance to snag the bottom. what do others do?

Single hook on the top.
I don't like trebles, especially on the kayak.

When I make butterknife jigs I put a single 5/0 siwashi on the top. I hate trebles. Guys use cheap ones to pull thru a snag and straighten the hook, then bend it back. Problem with that is obvious, big fish, could straighten, plus every time metal bends it gets weaker.

+1, I like the Owner DSH too.  But I add a split ring, so the hook is independant of the lure connecting to the snap swivel.  Hate using a treble unless im drifting whole squid.

Im all about the treble.  Tried stingers, tried the siwash.......not for me, too many missed strikes and fish that come unbuttoned.  I usually swap out to a bronze mustad or owner treble.

I fish jigs deep into the structure, banging the rocks to make noise and commotion.  I don't recall losing more than one or two jigs a trip and a lot of times I don't lose any.  I write em off as the cost of doing business, iron isn't a long term investment.

I hear this a lot but my experience says otherwise.  They don't bend as easily as people think, especially owners, mustads are a little softer.  I get back very few by applying pressure till they bend, line generally snaps before straightening.

Biggest issue I come across from this is dull hooks or bent hook points, these do lead to bad hook sets and lost fish.  Been a student of the Iron since I was a kid, don't ever recall having a hook straighten out with a fish on, drags usually prevent that from happening.

You really need a bruiser of a fish, some gorilla strength line a locked down drag and a telephone pole to accomplish a lost fish from a straightened hook.

Then again......I'm talking local lings, mileage may vary with Alaskan dinosaur sized lings :)

This^^^^^

I figure the extra hook up or two I might gain with a treble over a single hook I lose with more time spent trying to get the extra two hooks out of my net, my leg, my finger, my hand, any other gear on the kayak, etc.

Thumbs down on the treble. They end up hooking me too often. They also tend to get into everything else, not to mention getting hung up on the bottom more than singles.
Siwash singles have been fine, for me.

I used to put a single on the bottom, Tote showed me the on top nethod. Thought Iwould miss a ton of fish. Not the case, one once Iin a while, but man my snag ratio went WAY down. Im sold.

Wait... so you guys rig your jigs with hook at the top?!?  It's so simple, it's genius... dammit.  No wonder I kept losing jigs to snags.

I bought a couple Shimano flat fall butter fly jig. both had the hooks tied like that to the bottom. I'm wondering if I should move one or both to the top. any suggestions on that?
