I like it!!  WTMakeItArtistic!!  I've dabbled abit with the rattlecan painting...it holds up, but chips when sharp things hit it.

I've used Testors model paint for detailed painting on kayaks.
It holds up OK, but over time (and miles and miles of use) it does need repainting.

I dig the custom paint look, nicely done!

Is it just on the outside, or on top of the deck too?  Looks pretty sweet!  But I wonder if it will heat up in the sun a bit?

Oh, but I also think that the dings and scraps would actually look pretty awesome over time.  Like battle scars  :smt002

Nice! What kind of pain was it? Where can I buy it?

Will do. My dad (Raydon) says he hasn't seen many people do this yet so as a field trial I'll try to keep note of how things go
Raydon procreated? I thought he wasn't allowed to procreate on Earth in accordance with the laws of Krypton.

Does that make you Stud Shippey Jr. ?  :smt003

I wrapped tape around the tank area to keep a nice line and avoided painting the higher traffic areas on the top where feet, gear whatever would be more of an issue.

I'm hoping heat won't be too much of a factor as the water will keep washing over it but we'll see.

I went with rustoleum oil based flat black. Some people recommend marine grade paint but I sense the fact I don't store the kayak in water keep me out of the need for anti-growth chemicals or whatever additives they have in the other stuff. Marine paint is a bit pricey too.

Polyethylene plastic is not as paint receptive friendly as other surfaces. After a few water outings you should be able to judge the longevity of the paint job. There probably are paint products out there especially designed for certain plastic families but they will be costly. You did the right thing in giving it a shot with what was an affordable paint. Nice clean job.

I've had good results using rattle cans of Krylon Fusion paint. But it didn't look as cool as that! I really dig the artistic style.

This thread caused me to think of TAP Plastics stores. There is one in Santa Rosa and I believe more in the bay area. At any rate they do have first hand technical knowledge of resin and paint adhesives. If yak paint projects are meant to become permanent they should be an authoritative source on materials compatibility.
