Left the kayaks at home and made the long haul from Sacramento to Mendocino on Sunday for a shore dive with a few buddies. Conditions were great! Easily 20 feet of visibility, no wind, and water calm enough that we were able to jump right in off of a rocky point. First up, I checked on the status of my trophy abalone garden. They're coming along nicely and should be ready to harvest in another 20 years or so!

The first fish I came across was a modest black that looked like he'd make a decent meal. Apparently I wasn't the only one who thought so, because as soon as I took the shot a 30 inch ling bolted out of his hiding place and made a play for my fish. He followed it all the way to the surface before finally deciding it wasn't going to happen. I made a couple drops in the area to try and find the ling, but I wasn't seeing him... until, on a hunch, I turned around to discover I was being followed! I took a horrible shot, but somehow still managed to land him. A few minutes later, I came across a tasty looking cabezon and convinced him to come home with me, too.

That was enough fish to replenish my freezer, so I spent the rest of the dive just following my buddies around and filming them. Here's a link to the video.

Wow, I couldn't see the cab until you shot him.

Love the dive videos, thanks.

Killer. Watching that ling come after that fish was an interesting window into what happens down there.

Looks like Mr. Ling got the point that you did not like being stalked after you took his dinner away :smt044. Showing your buddies diving is a nice perspective. Fun vid, thanks for sharing it.

Those lings are fearless! I can't count the number of times I've been charged by one because it thinks my fish look tasty... or maybe because it thinks I do!

Thanks everybody for watching!
