For occasional ocean trips a 3 mil farmer john w/ relief zipper, neoprene booties, moisture-wicking long sleeve top, splash top over that, .pfd....you're set.  If you plan to hit the salt often invest in a dry suit.

Another question I have is do you wear dive boots with the wetsuit.  Maybe a dumb question but not having yakked in the salt I fear I'm a noob in this regard.  Thanks.

Sam

I wear a wetsuit, and pair with older running shoes for more strenuous portages (Sur, Bean) where you need traction and go up down grades.  Otherwise you end up dropping your boat, spraining an ankle, or worse.  The sloshing is no worse than booties, and the fit and feel is much better

Sam, I would suggest a 3mm farmer-john style wetsuit. On top of the wetsuit, get splash pants and a splash top. This way you'll be both dry AND safe. I call it the "poorman's drysuit" and that's what I wore for years, before getting a Kokatat drysuit. I would also suggest neoprene booties. You should be able to find the wetsuit for $80-120; splash pants from $50-80; top for $40-60; booties for $10-30.
Here's a killer deal on cheapo Splash Pants. Wear these over your wetsuit.

I'm waiting on a NRS Farmer John 3mil to show up on monday.  Got it on Amazon for 120.  Seems like a good deal, and after trying on 4/3 wetsuits, and a 2mil farmer johns at the O'Neill store, I decided that a full wet was going to be way too much, and a 3mil farmer john would suffice until it gets colder.  Then I guess it will be time to buy booties and a spray jacket.

Good deal Charles.  I ended up with a NRS farmer john in 3 mil.  I obtained a pair of Caddis neo wading shoes and with that and the gear that I have I'm ready for the big blue.  My fishing buddy Fish Junky is gearing up this week also.  Look out Timber Cove.
Thanks to all who helped with suggestions and ideas.  Bravo Norcal.
