Heading back to OC for my 2nd kayak fishing trip.  Arriving Minday night and leaving Wednesday afternoon.  I have a buddy who might or might not come, so I may be in my own.  Either way, the more the merrier.  I'll be in a white Subaru Outback and my name is Aaron.

Hey Aaron, I tried to get out there all weekend and failed!  Are you planning to fish on Wednesday before you leave?  I might be able to escape work that day.

I might be able to get out Wednesday. You guys up for some bait testing? I have a new 7.75" scampi's I'll be testing. It's much bigger than the old ones and should get munched real good.

I'll test baits for sure!  Will be awesome to meet yet another NCKA member.  I plan to start early on Wed morning- maybe 6 or 6:30 but will be hanging out within sight of the boat ramp on the right hand side of the cove.  Looking forward to it!!!

Where does one park and launch up there?  If I am looking at google Maps correctly do I turn in that lot by the old barn and follow the road down to the beach where it hooks to the right?  What time are you guys launching?  How far is Ocean Cove time wise from Santa Rosa? or is there a better way to get there?

I just went for the first time this past Saturday.  Turn into the lot (old barn area), head through the campground (the shack was closed but you can pay on the way out), drive until you get to the end of the road.  You'll see a fish cleaning station on the bluff and a narrow dirt road that leads down to the cove.  Park in the area to the right of the signs and nose in as tight to the edge as you can.  I saw some truck/trailer combos make some awkward U-Turns to back down that dirt road to the launch.  Bring your Wheeleez because it's a fairly steep hill and go fishing.  When you get back to your vehicle, you'll find a tag on the window reminding you to register/pay.  Head out to the Ocean Cove Store (across the street from the barn) to pay your $7.  Eazzzy peazzzy.

Although, on Saturday, it was a shitshow trying to get out of the launch area.  Kayaks strewn about and not much common sense or courtesy for people waiting to get out of the water... people hogging space on the ramp for no good reason, etc.

Here's my part of the report.

Got on the water about 6:30 to glassy seas and no wind.  The drift was almost zero.  had two small rock fish within the first 15 minutes and the second rock fish I let hang out for a while before I reeled him up...all of a sudden my rod goes BENDO and the drag is peeling!  I fought the fish for what seemed like a long time, but was probably only a few minutes, and then....nothing!  just one small little rockfish.  Drop the rock fish down again and BAM rod goes Bendo again!  This time I get the Ling Cod up to the surface, but in my excitement, if failed to have my net ready and the Ling was only hitchhiking!  He let go as sat there admiring him and not getting my net!  UGH!

Aaron had not shown up yet, so I headed back in to the beach for a pit stop and he was just getting ready to launch.  Back out we go.  Right in the mouth of the Cove I caught a nice Cabbie, and Aaron's Rod goes Bendo...but I'll let him tell about that.

I ended up with 1 cabbie, 1 26" ling and a small rockfish I kept because I was worried about not getting anything else.   Seems like the bite was really good first thing in the morning and then again around lunch, with out much happening in between.

In any case it was a beautiful day on the water with pretty much ideal conditions.   I'll post pictures tomorrow when I get them off my phone.

Hey guys, sorry I missed you. Sounds like a good time otw. Unfortunately I had to stick close to home and fished Natoma for a few LMB. Looking forward to the fish porn.

And Mike... I want to test those scampis! How can I get my mitts on some? You were right when we were fishing the lower AR... getting on the salt is where it is at. I got a limit of lings and a couple big blacks at OC on my first day on the salt. Let's go fish it.

Good job on the ling limit. Saltwater is definitely fun. As for those XL Scampi's, I'm still testing them. I hope to have them ready for LRC15 in Nov. I'll let you know the next time I plan to get OTW.

Here's the pictures.  El Bandito has't posted about his fish yet, but there is a picture of his prize too.
