I just found out that as a Federal employee I have Tuesday Jan 2nd off.  Evidently, President Bush has declared it a National Day of Mourning for the late President Gerald Ford.

Seeing that President Ford evidently enjoyed fishing in his day, I thought I'd do the same.

Anyway, if anyone else has the day off, has managed to get their 2007 license already and wants to go fishing let me know. Right now I'm thinking about trolling Lake Somoma for some land locked steelehead but I can be convinced otherwise.

Hey Bsteves,

Being a fellow Fed, I also have the day off.  I'm going to do some trolling up there this afternoon with my 9 year old and do some scouting up in the North end.  If things are looking good, I would be into doing another trip there on Tuesday.  It was either that or fish the Russian, as it is coming back into shape now as well......

Later

Hey Norm,

How was it on Sunday?  Let me know if you're up for another try on Tuesday.  I could be convinced to hit the Russian as well, but I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to river fishing.

Hey Brian,

My son and I fished in the north end of the lake out of the Yorty Creek launch.  He wanted to move around more than when he is on my kayak so we took out the old 8 foot dingy.  Fishing was slow, we both got a good bite each, followed by a quick release.  Right at the end, my son managed a really nice Crappie on a little lucky craft jerk bait.  The area Mike was fishing was from the lauch near the dam, and I just wanted to do some scouting up at the north end to see if they had moved up yet at all.  I'm thinking the fishing would be better around the dam at this point until the rains come heavy again at least.

I'm still very much a novice with the whole moving water thing myself, so we would both be floundering to a degree on the Russian I guess.  I really want to improve on my steelhead fishing, but at this point I think I am in some need of professional help.  I have managed to scratch a few here and there over the last few years, but still feel like I'm struggling.

I'm up for a trip to Sonoma again, the boat traffic should be light around the dam area on a Tuesday, even with all the other Feds out and about.  Let me know what time you want to get up there and I will be there.  (707)975-2759  Happy New Year....

Norm If you got a few the last couple of years you are doing better than most.

I'm not a pro but I do have a few tricks and spots I can show you.

If I was you guys I would hit the River it's as hot as it gets right now. Last two days below Dry Creek 1/2 the people got fish and the was a lot of people  getting limits plus. The fish are big with most going over 10 lbs.. The clay banks below the creek was the hot spot. I fished above Healdsburg this afternoon hooked 3 and landed a nice 11/12lb fats ass buck. I don't know how I am going to work all week. Roe has been the ticket but I talked to one regular who hooked 15 fish in 2 days on just a flame spinglo and yarn no bait, spoons and spinner are working as well as plugs..

Thanks Mike, now I am truly torn.  I have not heard back from Brian yet, but have my gear loaded for the Lake.  I have a friend staying over Wednesday and Thursday night from the Sac Valley and plan to hit the river one or both of those afternoons.  I have to work the rest of the week after tomorrow.  Were you fishing early or afternoon?  Also, I have walked to the dry creek area by making a crossing below the 101 bridge, but am not sure where the parking area that is close to the Dry creek inlet is.  How do you get over there?  Have you done much below the 101 bridge, between there and the dry creek mouth?  Maybe I'll fish the lake early tomorrow and the river in the afternoon.......all week.... :smt001

Thanks for the info!!!!  Look forward to hooking up with you.

Looks like Norm and I will be hitting Lake Sonoma around 8 am tomorrow (Jan 2nd).  On the off chance anyone else is interested VHF 69, we'll probably be near the dam.
