Casually pushed off the shore around 8am, weather was good but the drift was strong to the south west for some reason.  As per normal I couldn't catch fish if I wasn't losing gear, so in the rocks I went. Left a lot of jigs in the hour I was hugging the rocks, but did pretty good in that time also. Rock fish were a little slow (4) but I did nail a pair of Lings (29" & 32") off the northern rock that breaks the surface.  I have named them fish and Chips as it seemed appropriate and brought them home to meet the frying pan.

Funny thing. there was a bunch of whales cruising around and I took a moment to try and get a pic of one that was headed my way. While waiting with the camera my FF jumped from 40 fow to 10 fow and both poles took off. One came loose and the other broke off after giving the reel a dunk. Right after, the whale breached about 100' behind me. Soooo.... I hooked a whale today, "we're gonna need a bigger boat"  :smt003

Actually I think i have finally learned my lesson. I like to have a RF rig hanging off one side of the boat and a big hammer bouncing off the other side. This works fine drifting off SC or anywhere the bottom is relatively flat. Linda Mar is not the place, as soon as I cross the rocks it's snag left/snag right/both snag/line tangle F*&# it I'm going home.  :smt003 I guess there is a reason why I'm the only one out with 2 poles in the water. If I were smarter I would have listened to Sebast when he pointed this out.  :smt011

One more thing, this may seem very ignorant. Is there a reason you are not allowed to have 2 poles in the water? I have the 2nd pole endorsement (even though I never fish that far south).

The 2nd rod stamp is only for freshwater fishing east of the Carquinez bridge.

You are allowed to use as many rods as you like in the ocean as long as you are not targeting RCG and salmon. The regulations for RCG is very specific: 1 rod with maximum of 2 hooks.

Well shit, I can't find this regulation on the DGF website but will fall inline. I'm surprised this hasn't come up in casual conversation on the water.

Was anyone targeting Stripers? You can use multiple rods as long as you have no fish on board and are "targeting" halibut. A bit of a lie but it works for Stripers there, you can have two or more rigs until you get the first fish. Sharky, being a madman with multiple lines, had like a dozen going on until he landed a monster 50# plus. Then just one. But he was going for halibut :smt003 If they ask, your going for halibut.

The regulations are spelled out on pages 39-40, 43 of the Ocean Sport Fishing Regulations https://nrm.dfg.ca.gov/FileHandler.ashx?DocumentID=93478&inline=true

This topic has come up multiple times. Use the search feature and you will see the threads. You usually want to figure this stuff out before you get on the water. It will be a lot cheaper than getting a ticket.

Thanks for the help, I'm a East Coast transplant and Trying to get fully up to speed on all the wonderful regulations here in Beautiful Commiefornia. :smt002

It seems I was caught with my pants down, I just read that 2 poles was fine and didn't know to search for pole numbers by fish species. Again, my bad and thanks krusty.

Wait, we required to have a net on board?

"No person shall take finfish from any boat or other floating device in ocean waters
without having a landing net in possession or available for immediate use to assist in landing undersize
fish of species having minimum size limits; the opening of any such landing net shall be not less
than eighteen inches in diameter."

Yes, you need an 18" net.
