Aint gonna happen. You need to reserve like six months in advance. Your better off going down to cambria. Campground is just about on the beach.. Cool place!

Driving south on 1, you have Andrew Molera state park then Pfeiffer Big Sur state park. There are also a bunch of private (expensive) campgrounds in the actual town of Big Sur including Fernwood, Big Sur Campgrounds & Cabins, Riverside, Ventana, Santa Lucia, and Sawmill Flat. The closest reasonable launch to the town is north 30 minutes to Carmel or south an hour to Limekiln.
But when people refer to "Big Sur" they are usually talking about a region; not necessarily the actual town...Big Sur means the coast from Carmel to Cambria. So as you continue driving south on 1, you will also run into campgrounds about 1-1.5hrs south of the town. In order they are Limekiln state park, Kirk Creek, and Plaskett Creek. You can also drive up Nacimiento Ferguson Rd (across from Kirk Ck campground) to 2 more campgrounds: Ponderosa and Nacimiento Creek.
Go reserve the group sites at Plaskett Creek campground for next August/Sept of 2016. I noticed there are some wknds available.

You definitely have to plan far in advance for anything in Big Sur. Kirk Creek is awesome but you literally have to book it as soon as the registration period opens. Plaskett is nice too but fills up quickly for the big camping dates. There are several campgound in the area but everything looks full.

Not just big sur, but any of the camp spots in SC.  It has been this way for years, and I hate it.  Gone are the days when my dad would say, "Lets go camping today!" and we would jump in the camper and end up at some camp spot along the coast.  Basically if they have registration, they are probably booked/over booked for every weekend possible until after labor day.  Your only choice is to go mid week.

yeah forget getting a campsite down there. it's either middle of the week or nothing. i've looked through the whole year and nothing free on weekends and this was like in march. it's madness down there. oh wait, that fits perfectly with NCKA.
