Personal preference. I use 80lb braid and 30 or 50 lbs mono leader on a casting reel. Just know how to break off without going for a swim.

I don't use spin I g reels except for Barbie pole competitions.

The heaviest that you feel comfortable breaking off. For me, that used to be 20, and now it's 30.

20 pound mono is tough to lose a fish on, yet not too tough to break off if snagged.
It's easy to tie too. It lands plenty of fish.
If you don't know where you're headed, any road could get you there.

Thanks for all the replies. Along this line, which ugly stick tiger would you recommend? Spin rod? Which action?

Medium Heavy, and 20# mono Tiger rod is my set up, I use that rod for rock fish, salmon, sturgeon, shark. Versital and functionality. Yeah I break off some big fish, but it's ok, doesnt happen often.

You guys won't believe this but I use #80 braid power pro. yeah it's over kill but on the sharp bottom reef it breaks easy as hell. If I get snag 99% of the time my leader#50 breaks easily. talk about overkill lol

for the normal person up to #50 is ideal with 20-30 leader.

50 lb. With 30 lb top shot or 30 lb leader.

Learn how to work your drag settings and 15lb mono or flouro is fine.

I use 30lb braid with a 15 or 17lb mono topshot, fish 20-30 times a year for RF and have only ever lost one big ling to a break off.

40/40. The mono always breaks first.

When I grow up and get the chance to fish for those on my kayak, I'm gonna go with #40 braid main(stealth white or green power pro) and #30 mono from walmart the red color.
