My family and I recently spent two weeks travelling/camping and fishing the north coast from bodega up to patricks point.  We had a great trip but my AT&T phone was pretty much worthless the entire time. Any suggestions? Some said Verizon, some said cellular one is better for more remote areas. I just want something in case of emergencies.

We switched to Verizon for coverage, seems to be as good as any along the north coast.

What I did years ago was call a few places, like small local businesses and such in remote areas that I go to, introduced myself to whoever answered the phone and basically told them I was looking for (advice on ) the cell company with the best coverage in their area, everyone I talked to was very helpful once they knew what I was looking for. That's how I chose Verizon but that was about 5 yrs ago.

I have both AT&T and Verizon. Verizon gets better coverage along the coast.

If you just want a phone for emergencies, rent a satellite phone for the trip.

+1 verizon. I work on Att cell networks and they are horrible!!!! Sites are old and always get the bandaid treatment for repairs when the whole damn site needs to be rebuilt!

Verizon has fantastic coverage but their in-store customer service is atrocious.  I switched over to Boost Mobile and it's been great.  Not sure how their coverage is along the coast, though.

I don't know about Verizon's cell coverage in that area, but I do know that they have the worst customer service in the known universe. At least that was the case a few years ago when they screwed up our billing after we moved. Imagine being connected to a call center in India, where you get the exact same run-around every time you call. It took about a dozen phone calls and an uncountable number of hours to fix a really minor problem.

Verizon has the best coverage, but are the most expensive and it's a contract, which doesn't bug some. However, there are pay-as-you-go phones from Wal-Mart, Best Buy, etc., that use Verizon for service, but are significantly cheaper and are no contract.

I would have to say that MetroPCS/T Mobile are a close second in coverage though. I get coverage for calling almost everywhere that Verizon does and some weird areas (out deer hunting) that Verizon doesn't cover. And they roam in the Verizon network, so at least I can text anywhere within range of our signal or Verizon signal. Plus the 4g LTE is fast and reliable. Unlimited everything for $50 a month, no contract.

I believe T mobile bought metro, but I still pay to metro. Anyhow, I am in the woods a lot and have no problems up and down any main road/highway or any communities (including shelter cove) on the coast. I was way up in the middle of nowhere last rifle season and was able to call out from the trinity alps. I get service from Redding to the Oregon border on I-5 too.
