Hi everyone,

Hoping I can get some help. My family gifted me with my first kayak - Field and Stream Eagle Talon 12, and I'm trying to figure out the correct size/style of scupper plugs for the yak. The holes are 1.5"

I've seen posts from a few who have the same kayak and wonder what you did for scupper plugs.

I also welcome input from those who own other kayaks.

I apologize if this is a repeat question; I did not see it when I searched the forums.....

Go to REI or sport chalet.  They make them beveled so the more you push them in the more water tight they get.

If you cant find any, the soft practice golf balls sold at Walmart and sporting places would prolly work as well.

Are you using it for fresh or salt water? I have the same yak and don't use plugs yet cause I'm strictly freshwater until I get my safety stuff together.

To first answer your question, I think you could use any of them.  They all seem to be big enough to fit 1.5".  I can check mine when I get home, but pretty sure the Ocean Kayak and Hobie ones that I have would work fine.  You can also DIY and make some.  I've seen people use foam balls that were kids or cat toys to start.  Or just some pool noodle, packaging foam, etc.

Example:

Second, why do you want them?  Looking at the pics of the boat, you only have scuppers up front? Maybe under the seat too?  Are you getting swamped easily or just dont want to have any water in your foot wells?

The cheapest and just as effective as anything else method that I have found are the rubber end caps for chair legs that can be found at Home Depot or Lowes. You get four for about five bucks :-)

This is what I have on all 5 or so of my kayaks. I run a piece of para cord through it and tie off to a pad eye.

I only use them on the holes directly in front of me so I don't drop gear out them.

Hi bigmarv1, thanks for getting back to me. Since I'm brand spanking new, I've sticking with small fresh water lakes for now, but I plan on taking out into various bay waters sometime down the road. Sounds like I might be able to get away with some DIY options until I get to that point.

I'd say go without. The water is so warm plus the air temp being hot. You'll enjoy what little water gets through.

Thanks alshobieoutback. I did see that video prior to posting my question.

Regarding your second question, I'm not getting swamped, but I want to plug the two holes directly under my seat. The info will also come in handy when I get to the point of testing out more open, or rapid bodies of water.

Thanks for taking the time to help.
