I am a 28 year old looking to get back into ocean fishing after years away from the trade.  I grew up bottom fishing and trolling for salmon out of Port San Luis Obispo with my grandpa.  Am considering a kayak after stumbling on these forums and looking at what you guys are doing, but mostly this site just seemed to have an active community with great fishing knowledge.

Thanks for having me!

Welcome. Lots of us here from the northbay. A kayak is a great way to fish! You're also welcome to check my rig out sometime if you have any questions. I fish at least 2x a week and have a few kayaks if you would like to tag along.

thanks for the warm welcome everyone. i have to admit, i am getting really pumped for the idea of kayak fishing after working my way through these forums!

A couple questions:
1.are there any good resources out there that will help me in selecting a kayak?  I have found some online guides / articles, which were informative, but would be nice to get some     information from people who are actually out there paddling in the NorCal waters!
2. essentially same question but on rod / reel / gear set ups.  I have seen some good threads on here, so if no specific recommendations come to mind, I will go back through those.

Thanks for all of your help on these boards! I hope to one day return the favor to other newbies

demo demo demo, you won't know what boat fits you till you paddle it. reviews and suggestions from people who paddle certain brands are great starters but until you spend some time in the saddle you won't know if it fits you. check out clavey in petaluma for demos, they carry jackson and ocean kayak fishing kayaks, and if you feel a pedal kayak would more suit you then check out wind toys in santa rosa, they both offer demos and apply the fees to a purchase, as for rod and reels, when beginning, go on the less expensive route, gear takes a beating in the beginning of your kayak fishing adventures, cameron

As far as choosing a kayak you need to demo as stated above. Both shops mentioned are very helpful. Get an idea of what you want to do (lakes? Ocean? Ponds?) and that will help narrow down the selection.

For rod/reel/gear I always find myself bringing too much stuff! It's a kayak, don't worry too much about bringing the kitchen sink!

-bigmarv- lots of quick trips to local ponds or the river or lake Sonoma. Lately I've been in Tomales bay for halibut and van damme for lings and rockfish. Pm me for a trip sometime.
