I am looking for recommendations for a trolling fly rod/reel for salt water and big striper.

Yes, that's right  I am looking for a fly rod. Don't laugh.  :smt006 :smt003

From what I have learned from the google it looks like I will need a 10 weight rod, and I assume I will go with glass since I plan to use a downrigger. Any suggestions are appreciated!

I must be smoking the same stuff, because a fly from a DR sounds like a great idea to me. I'd like to hear more about it...

I have trolled clouser minnows behind a dodger and caught some good stripers in the port. That is the extent other than behind a clear bubble for trout. Im intrigued too!
Live your life, the way you want to be remembered. Don't have any regrets, we only get this one dance to make it count. Start at your eulogy, and work backwards.

I thought the same thing until I tried it last week (from a PB).  It was a blast, and I would like to start doing it from my kayak.  I guess downrigger flyrod is a big thing in Scandinavia.

You will hear more about it  :smt003. Naoaki and the Itsbangtime crew plan to give it a whirl in the next few weeks.  We will do a proper write up etc.

and you dont need a DR to troll with a fly rod if the target fish is in the top 10 feet intermediate or even floating line will work I have slayed trout that way. Not from a yak though but I dont see why you couldnt!

Or you can ask a Norwegian!

Fly + Fishing = Flyfishing  :smt003 You're damn right I'm gonna call it fly fishing and the snooty trout fairies can suck my farts as they wave their wands.*   :smt044 :smt044  *This is a joke, and only a joke.  If it were a real insult it would not be followed by emoticons. Back in the day when I used to have time for trout, my favorite trolling setup was a wolly-bugger type behind a kastmaster or cleo. Remove the treble hook and tie on 8-12" of leader...with a fly on the end. The spoon imparts good action on the fly; it's kinda like using a micro-dodger. But I was using spin gear--not flyrod & reel.

Are you thinking about a mooching reel or fly reel? Because I have a spare Alvey that I will never use, if you want it. It's a large arbor reel so you can pickup (or let out) line quickly but it's single action aka no drag.

Thanks for the offer, but i'm looking at fly reels w/drag.  I plan to use an anchovy pattern fly behind a kicking wiggle disc with a short setback, and run flash off of the dodger.  I figure I can still call it flyfishing with the wiggle disk since "indicators" ie bobbers are largely accepted in the fly fishing community.  :smt003
