I recently purchased a Ram Rod holder for the front of my Tarpon kayak, and it seems a little awkward to use. What would you recommend that would work for both conventional and spinning reels?

Where have you been? Glad to see you posting.

I've got a scotty mount that I could never get used to. I switched to a tube style "rocket launcher" holder with a ram ball mount and it works with all types of reels.
My only gripe is that the ball mounts are difficult to tightem enough to keep heavier setups from pulling the holders out of position. A scotty type tube mount would probably be best.

I think any ball mount rod holder (zooka tube, 2008 tubes) are fine for targeting smaller fish.  However, when going after bigger fish the ball mounts do not hold and the holder will pivot back towards the stern.  Also if on the left side of boat the screw ball will loosen when pulled hard enough either by a fish or from a snag.  I prefer the scotty baitcaster (no. 280) rod holder work for both baitcaster and spinning reels  You can get the mounts so the base fits into the factory rails. Add a gear head extender to give it some height and some added adjust-ability as well.  My 2 cents

I agree the ball mount doesn't hold very well. I am gonna try the Ram spline post, and see if that design works. The spline post is similar to what Scotty uses.
Hi Sean, I sure miss fishing with the salty crew. Not too many rock-cod in the Boise area, but there are large catfish and bass in the Snake River. Hard to find people that fish out of kayaks around here.
