Long story short - need to get a kayak to San Diego.

Malibu blem warranty fiasco that can be summed up with the fact I was sent a kayak with a bent keel by OEX, and they say I'm responsible for shipping it back.  :smt013

Their other offer was to give me a discount on another kayak and keep this one - discount isn't big enough to be worth getting a 3rd boat. :smt012

It's usable, but I can tell it doesn't track quite right. Malibu confirmed that although a blem, this was their bad.

Anywho, anyone know an inexpensive way to ship this down to San Diego? There may not be a way, but I figured I'd ask the NCKA buddies and see what's up.

Cheers,
Logan

Did you tell them about the "bad press" they will be receiving through the NCKA website?  Share this thread with other kayak fishing sites.

If not, they are responsible for giving you what you paid for.  A 100% product

What they should say is,,,   "Sorry we sent you a defective boat, we'll send out a replacement right away "    You shouldn't have to pay for shipping twice.      They can go back to Malibu for a replacement.

Yet another good reason to purchase from a local vendor.

It was sold as a blem. OEX offers a 90 day I believe warranty on blems.

It has a weld on the seam line, which I'm okay with if that was the blem.

As soon as I figured out it wasn't right, I let them know. That was June 17th. Emailed pictures on the 18th.

They finally gave me these options today, after calling once a week since I sent pictures, along with a couple follow up emails.

One of their guys told me that "because of what happened they are now checking the blems over more carefully"

Malibu admitted it was their fault.  Blems aren't supposed to have anything other than cosmetic defects.  Why isn't malibu stepping up here?  This shouldn't be on the buyer or the vendor.

I think I'll get Malibu involved directly.

I'm fine with cosmetic stuff so I was trying to save some $$ on my first yak.

Regarding buying locally, Dan at Headwaters has my business now.

Oh,,,,   it's a Blem,,,       Shit,,, heat the " bent keel" up with a heat gun and straighten it out.      Sounds like OEX doesn't have any culpability in the problem.       Probably got bent in the shipment.

Blems are more than cosmentics.    Almost always it's thin in areas or some deformity.  My dealer in So Cal goes to Malibu factory weekly to pick up those " Blems ".       A 1200 dollar boat sells for 600 -800 bucks.   Discounted not because the logo was mis-placed.      That old adage,,, " ya get what you pay for" fits .

Might be a good reason to drive down and fish La Jolla while you're there.   Pick out a new" Blem".

a picture speaks a thousand word, eh?

The entire seam line is crooked.

It's not like the boat was half off, either. It's a 800 boat that was 300 bucks off.

That looks like a kayak that should have been recycled rather than sold. OEX got sold a bogus boat, Malibu should make it right. A replacement blem kayak should be free. Shipping the replacement boat should be the only issue in question. Maybe cover shipping for the hassle of having to dispose of the "garbage" kayak. Five hundred bucks is a lot of money, I'd be pissed.
