Can I target vermillion?

Is there a way to target vermillion? I've got to be close to 100 yak ocean trips and I've never seen one. I focus on ling, but happy to switch up if it's necessary.

Almost always 70'-120' - jig, bait squid/herring/sardine.

Nothing really diff'rent 'bout verms/rockies/lings/etc. except sometimes they're suspended. I grab one now and then at 30 to 40 feet when towing a swim tail grub at mid-depth searching for suspended blues.

I asked a spearo buddy of mine the same question and he said he looks for them deep in holes or under overhangs. Sometimes he said there will be a ling at the hole entrance and looks for the reds farther back often in pairs. I've caught them mostly with irons at +30' always around dramatic structure. Like I Zod said though not much different than lings etc.

I have only caught one. I do want to know how to target them too. Some people say they like bigger bait/lures like fat 7 inch grubs or swim baits. I keep hoping for some Red to come up, but nope.

Thanks...sounds like I've been working too deep. I'm all over drop off structure.  Tend to fish points, on back side of nw swell. When nature lets me.

In my experience, verms seem to really go after squid, or artificials that closely replicate squid. I've caught my biggest verms on big, white or pearl, twin tail swimbaits.

Bingo. There really is a lot to that point.

Also, I don't know if others have experienced this or if there's any correlation,  but it seems like if I'm getting into more coppers than blues/blacks, there seem to be more verms in the mix as well.

yep, and when you find that place, you tend to keep it to yourself 

So much action on lings this year. I have lost my focus on cod. Need to shift gears . But it so much fun catching and releasing lings. Think trying up a little higher on the water column is a good start.

If I'm not trying to avoid snags I don't feel like I'm fishing, lol. Will give it a go. So 30'-40' regardless of water depth?
