Most of the guys I see are fishing from shore in Monterey.

yeah i fish from shore too and havent seen a soul in a yak fishing out there.im thinkin it would be sick to stay stay on the outside of the surfline and fish. dont know how profitable it would be but worth a shot maybe.

I really wanna give it a shot. From all the reports that have been coming out the schools are very large so I feel like if you are able to find them, GAME ON! Probably gonna give it a go the weekend after this if anybody wants to troll the surfline :smt006

I've tried it about a dozen times with zero stripers to show for it...trolling outside the surfline from MBK to Sand City. In the past, guys have caught them from yaks in the Cap/NB area when the bait is thick. Jig up a sardine then flyline it towards the surf and hold on tight!

Yeah, that happened 1 year I can recall and lasted for like 3 weeks, never to happen again.

I had something BIG on this am at Manresa.  On a 5 oz Hopkins Lure with ducktail.  First cast, in the dark, before 6am.  BANG and ZZZZZZZing. (Actually ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZing! On and screaming for 7 or 8 seconds)  I gave an extra tug to set the hook, and it was gone.

In retrospect, he way it pulled it probably was a big ray or maybe a sealion.  No tail pump at all.

Would you believe that I didn't even get excited?  Would you believe that I fished like a f ing maniac for the next three hours?  Old School Golden Sabre 11' with Penn 807 coffee grinder...My right shoulder needs help.

Cen Coast gives the best advice.  I can see the dolphins working outside the surfline, and New B/Cement Ship area is where I've seen them caught  from the yak in the past.  Use live bait.  If you can't catch live bait there, likely no stripers either.

That's what got me into kayak fishing in the saltwater. I was on the beach at New Brighton and somebody in a kayak pulled in a big striper. I thought that must happen all the time. But I've never seen (or heard of) it since...

Maybe we should have a meet-up and striper hunt.
