Anyone know what the biggest halibut speared in Santa Cruz or the surrounding area is?
I'm trying to call BS on a 68lber story.

State record is 72lbs 8 oz off channel islands for scuba and Angler is 67lbs 4 oz also off the islands....be a pretty big deal if someone nabbed on of those.

Santa Cruz Island is where the 72lb speared fish came from. I've got a clipping of it in my dad's fishlog. Maybe 1978?
I remember seeing pics in the SB news press, mostly because I was a fish-geek kid, and my brother -in-law speared a 50+# halibut that same year. Thing was as big as me.

It's the ocean, so anything can happen. I'm positive that guys have shot or caught halibut over 40lbs around here. And seen pics of supposed 50lbers.
But I would absolutely call BS if someone tried to tell me they shot a 68lb halibut in Santa Cruz.

I tangled with a big butt in 40+ range in Capitola. Never seen one so big in person. I ended up in the water and it swam free in the end. Hit a good sized croaker as bait.

There was a 67 plus pound fish caught a few years ago at Santa ROSA Island. Exact weight varies depending on who wrote the article.
