My name is Rob and I'm relocating from Florida to Eureka in two weeks.

I've been kayak fishing for a few years and look to continue on the west coast. I had a Native Slayer 12 but recently sold it to a buddy so I didn't have to deal with it in the move. Thinking about getting a Slayer Propel 10 since storage will be limited at the new place. Anyone know of any local places or a good online site to use?

After I get setup I'll be game for any established fishermen to show me the ropes of fishing on the Pacific. post here or PM me if you are in the area.

Welcome :smt006

There is a very active kayak fishing community here. Post up when you get to town, but in the mean time check out LoletaEric on YouTube.

Welcome Rob..  I grew up in my kiddo days in St Pete.  Dont be surprised the ocean is not as warm as FL.   Dress accordingly.

Welcome.  I don't think a Native Propel 10 would suit you well for the ocean here.

My name is Rob too and I  live just outside of Eureka.  I'm on the salt all the time and have a couple of extra Hobe Outbacks which are excellent fishing kayaks for our North Coast.  Get in touch and I  can get you going and into the fish.

Welcome!

Once you're settled in over here, check out one of the local shops & try a few of the proven kayaks others use on the West Coast.  I lived in & fished Florida for about 5 years & I can attest that the differences in rigging, kayak models, etc. is WAY different out here.

Thanks for the friendly welcomes!

I was born and raised in St Pete too. Lived right next to Weedon Island and spent a whole lot of time fishing Ft De Soto. I'll miss the warm water from Florida for sure.

Is a Propel 13 also out of the question? I've ridden in both Hobies and Natives and prefer the propel to the mirage. I've got a little bit of brand loyalty but I can warm up to the Hobies if they are vastly superior for the west coast. I'm used to inshore fishing in mangroves and grass flats so I know this is going to be a big change for me.

I know I will have to relearn everything I know about fishing saltwater. And all my nice light tackle will probably be useless out there. I'm glad this forum is here to get some reliable info.

10 is def too short. I think Nwka (northwest kayak anglers, NCKA sister site) crabbycabby is the only guy I've seen in a 13 north of cape Mendocino. He seemed to like it alright when I talked to him at ORC (Oregon rockfish classic) last year.

Also, You should join the Lost Coast Kayak Anglers Facebook page.
