Yeah man, lets do it!  Gotta wait for those minus tides.   Tide was perfect tonight, we just ran out of sunlight.  My son, standing on the reef, was astounded when I handed him this coat hanger with a live fish on it.    I always thought you needed a big long bamboo pole, but the arm's length technique works great.  Prowl the edge of the rock, push the kelp outta the way, and find the little caves.

Maybe a 2-foot pole with the coathanger attached to that?

One thing for sure, I'm paying attention to the minus tides this winter.  Remember, you can catch and keep the rockfish if you're fishing from shore.

You don't even need a coat hanger.  The one time I pokepoled, I just used a handline with a egg sinker and a treble hook tipped with squid.  I just dropped it into cracks and at the edge of rocks and caught grass rockfish and eels.

dude, good to see you today. Not often that the dog and I pass a van like that with a yellow fish slayer like mine strapped to the top; I knew it was you!
Let's get them perch sometime soon...
For now, I'm playing with a coathanger over here.

I love poke-poling at Moss Landing Jetty at any low tide.  Usually get a lot of eels and smaller rockfish but once I got a pretty decent (but not quite legal) cab.  Have you seen the How To Poke Pole a Monkey Faced Eel video?  It's pretty cool.

man, you guys must be good in 'balancing act'.  I tried pokepoling with a friend several times and I tell you, it's very hard to get a solid footing in those slippery rocks. I am always wondering if there is a special shoes you can wear to get a grip of slippery rocks???

My friend uses 9-foot bamboo pole with some type of steel hanger at the top end.  Cooking the eel right has eluded me so many times so I have not found will power to get back to pokepoling for eels.  I've been searching around how to make unagi or how to smoke the darn eel---japanese style.  But no luck.  I tried 3 times in cooking eels but all failures so I just gave them away...

Pls send some pics next time so some of us will be encourage to do pokepoling...

Fun video, brings back memories, I haven't done any poke poling in years. This is the time of year to give it a shot though. I used to saute tomatos and onions, ( season how you like ) and then lay the eel fillets on top and steam for 10 min with a lid on. Serve with rice .GOOD! I've also smoked fillets in a Little Chief smoker with the skin left on and had good results. As for footing, some kind of spikes would be a good idea. Korkers are a brand that comes to mind - they fit over your wader boots. Have fun, and watch for waves! Tom

I personally do a less-intense version of poke-poling.  I just rig up a regular rod/reel with a 4oz weight and a 4/0 hook on a short dropper about 8inches above it.  I use the weight to get the bait down in the cracks.  I don't even need to wear waders to do this.  It might not be technically poke poling but it's a similar concept and it totally works.

If I ever did go full-out with waders, though . .I would go for the carpet soled ones.  I think those are awesome for walking on slippery rocks.

Sweet.

Thanks Santa.  I definately want to do some poke poling soon.

Bring it down on your four wheel sleigh.  Lets get together to do some winter crappie.

BTW you gonna go to the crappie seminar?  Maybe we could meet up then.

THANKS MOOCH!!

For Pleasure Point, though I'm sticking to the "arms length" wire coat hanger! Maybe a 2-3 foot pole for that spot.  Let's get together and do Pigeon for eels next minus tide with the long poles!
