I didn't say that accidents never happen on 17.  But I will say that if your driving the speed limit, and paying attention, it's a pretty docile drive. Really only 3 curves on the whole road to look out for.  Yet if you look at the divider in those spots, looks like they are hit almost daily.  I think that people just get distracted, or drive too fast, try to txt on their phone, or other such things and make mistakes.

One early morning on the way down to Moss I came around a fast bend there was a woman standing with her back to traffic on the dividing line right behind her suv which was sitting at a diagonal in the right lane, putting her hair up in a ponytail

My car and another swung over and barely missed her

I had just passed a big rig a minute before and by the time I got 911 on the phone the dispatch person answered "are you calling about the accident?" I guess they're pretty good at locating where calls are coming from

Good to drive like an old lady on that road
