They have a floating toilet there. What more could you ask for?
There's always money in the banana stand.

It's a fun lake.

Not so sure about the salmon.  It's possible that they were once planted there but I don't think they reside there any longer.  Do know that they plant rainbows and browns and used to plant brookies.  There is a sleeper small mouth population also.

Shore fishing the "brush pile" is key but I've never been able to find it.  Ask at the front gate I guess.

I've always done well trolling form the floating bathroom passed the chimney to the fence line that comes down to the lake.

Best of luck.

There are Kokanee in there. I haven't fished it since boy scouts. We always did well with Kastmasters and SuperDupers.
I only fish on days that end with Y

6 of us fished for 5 hrs, one bite and none caught...tried near the campground and further up below the upper dam. Used worms, powerbait of various scent and colors, bobbers and Carolina rig...tried to use drop shot but the nasty shale rock broke me off in 2-3 casts each time...went to a weedless  senko and broke off on 2nd cast so I gave up on bass. Weather was nice tho.

In regards to the species, you guys are confusing McClure & McSwain.
McClure is the big lake up above and it has a good variety of species. McSwain is the lower lake (more like a damned up river) and does not have much variety...mostly rainbows and few random bass.

My neighbors fished Mc Swain last weekend and said nobody was catching fish. My advice is to call the marina or check the DFG web-site to see when they planted it last. Or more importantly when they will plant it next. It is almost exclusively planted rainbows. It is a put and take fishery.

Hey Mike.

When its slow there. I am talking more when the weather is warm. I have coaxed a few from the dam drifting east hugging the  bottom with night crawlers.

Going  to there trout derby in oct. Its a nice event.

From what I understand, the Calaveras Fish Hatchery, the main hatchery that plants the lake, has shut down to lack of water.  I first heard of them shutting down over a month ago.  This could be the reason for the slow trout fishing.  Who knows if the marina will be able to afford having Mt. Lassen come that far south to plant.  I grew up fishing McSwain and love the lake, but this could be it for it.   :smt010
