Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

I just want to keep the fish generally close in size.  Browns get too big to be fair, as do sea run trout.

So you think those 8# planters we've been seeing pictures of lately wouldn't be able to hold their own against a brown, steelhead, or lake trout.  I sure haven't seen very many pictures of 8# browns, steelhead, or lakers posted here.  I wouldn't mind opening this up to ALL trout.  And shoot, make it heaviest limit, which would tip things in favor of going for a limit of 5 jumbo stockers anyway.

I agree with Allen except I vote for the largest 1 fish. Trout are fragile and if you weigh them they will probably die. I will be fishing for native or holdover trout and don't want to catch more than 1 or  2.

ther is a river here that they are planting with big trout does that count? what about browns?
Are you talking about the San Juaquin?
The area between  Lost lake and the dam used to hold some monster trout and paddling/fishing from there to 99 can be a good time at high water.

Count me in for the largest fish/ C&R philosophy instead of taking a limit too.
Thanks for the trout hunt and the double day format rocks.

No the kings below pine flat.  They put some of the big ones in the at lost lake as well  but last year they were planting them on the kings every other week. and they were suposed to do so every winter for three years.

Thanks for the info GA.
Ive never fished the lower kings, but have had MANY great kayak adventures on the upper kings during my whitewater days.
My dad used to tell me that the trout hatchery below Millerton would frequently dump brooders in above the "broken bridge".  Dont know if it still true though or if that old bridge is still there.

I think non-sea run trout(Genus Oncorhynchus) would be good. That would be:
Apache trout, Oncorhynchus apache
Seema, Oncorhynchus masou subsp
Cutthroat trout, Oncorhynchus clarki
Gila trout, Oncorhynchus gilae
Golden trout, Oncorhynchus aguabonita
Rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss

I would leave out the Char family (Genus Salvelinus):
Aurora trout, Salvelinus fontinalis timagamiensis
Brook trout, Salvelinus fontinalis
Bull trout, Salvelinus confluentus
Dolly Varden trout, Salvelinus malma
Lake trout, Salvelinus namaycush
Silver trout, † Salvelinus fontinalis agassizi (extinct)

I think Steelhead  being sea-run have a size advantage and are more comparable to salmon in some ways.

Amador anybody?" :smt001

If it is MLK weekend I would love to fish Almanor. I have never fished it in January. Isn't it iced over?

Lets go to Pyramid and catch 28 inch cutthroats! That would be cool!
Otherwise, I would suggest Del Valle or Amador (note: does not ice over) or New Melones for big 'bows. The lower Kings will have the big boys planted again this year but it might be kinda dangerous at high flows...many potential obstructions.

This would be my first MFF Tourney and I'm looking forward to it!

Pyramid would "cool" if not "freezing". The fishing reports have been very good for big cutthroats the last few weeks. Just don't fall out of your yak pulling one of thos bad boys in. Hypothermia in 30 seconds for sure. If it is MLK weekend, might be able to do a fish/ski combo. That would be really cool.

I'm in! how and where? I don't care!  Two or three day is a great idea to get more involved and expand the FISHING time.

Hey Molbasser,

Would love to participate, especially for the benefit of a fellow kayak angler.  Can you bring me up to speed on what and how the virtual tourney works?  I assume my son and I could participate from Lake Sonoma?  Thanks...

Norm
