Getting my kayak next week, really excited. Been an avid fisherman for 20+ years. This will be my first yak.

We will be camping in New Brighton Beach, Capitola in a few weeks and would love to take the yak and try my luck. Anyone have suggestions on where to fish there? What type of fish (assume rockfish, cod, halibut) and types of bait etc.? Thanks in advance.

Launch @ Santa Cruz Harbor (near Aldo's) or I believe Capitola Pier.  Best bet is to target RF.  The GWS sightings in the general area are VERY HIGH right now so just be careful.

If you are being serious that I will probably hold off. Not a huge fan of sharks. I can try some ocean fishing another time.

What is a popular batter to power fish finders with? I was looking at the lowrance mark 4 and need a small 12v battery.

Also, how are people holding onto their catch, stringer or putting the fish on board? Any suggestions? Thanks.

7-9 ah 12 volt lead acid is standard. They are serious about the GS sightings. Most people use a tethered game clip to hold their fish.

I work here in Watsonville, across the street from the watsonville airport where specialized helicopter tours & training flies from.  There are soo many sightings lately along that stretch of beach/water that they are doing daily tours above to see them.  Yeah, there's a few in the area now. :smt002

Battery.  That unit draws VERY low current; less than 1 amp/hour.  A 8-9aH battery will get you a full day & then some on the water.

Welcome to the madness Bcool  :smt006. Most people use the thru-hull method for mounting the transducer.

Wet Bath Shoot Thru the Hull

When the talk about "Thru Hull" they mean, shoot thru the hull .... not drill thru the hull like a real 'Boat Thru Hull' is.

WTTM BCool your gonna love kayak fishing.

If I might make a friendly suggestion. Either partner with someone who knows self rescue or take a class and learn this before heading out in the salt. This might make the difference between and bad trip and a tragedy.

I live just down the road from you and have been thinking about heading out to Folsom soon to do some fishing and practice self rescue again. I will post something up and your more than welcome to join me.

Welcome. I'm here in lincoln too. I head out to Camp Far West couple times a week this time of year, going out tomorrow night to take a buddy kayak fishing for his first time. good place during evenings during week bite is hot an hour before dark and no boat traffic during week, just watch for big wind days gets choppy, I have gone out on a couple sketchy days lately to get ready for Albion ocean tournament :)  I have a season pass and get my money's worth. If you want to start local I'm out at the Lincon mudhole often, when the water dropped low enough last year all other power boats stayed off the water even on Saturdays
