that's what i'm freaked out about sometimes if i'm really exhausted by peddling i won't be able to get back on. so i bring a paddle float with me so i can easily get back on without the kayak flipping over when i grab it.

Gotta know how to self rescue BEFORE you go out into the ocean.

I agree with Krusty. I know, I know... armchair quarterbacking, but that guy's reentry technique was terrible.

Had he rolled toward his butt instead of crawling onto his stomach, as it looks like he was doing, he would have stayed on the kayak.

The best advice I got from the Class was to "swim" onto the kayak. Put my legs out behind me, horizontal to the surface (not pointing down), and then kick like I'm swimming while simultaneously "pulling" the kayak toward my chest.  WAY less effort then trying to pull myself up over the gunwale.

+1 That was the technique taught at MBK when I took my class.

that was the only technique that worked for me. i tried the getting in from the front/back and i couldn't get back in.

also self rescue in a lake is very fun especially at the port of sacramento  :smt044

Here is the full story.

He made so many mistakes: cluttered deck, climbing over 2015 Hobie seat, open neck gasket, not dressed for immersion... :smt009 He is clearly lucky to be alive.

Superman that thing. I had some folks in classes that only got it when i explained they were trying to put the kayak under them, rather than climb on top of it.

And puke in your lap ffs. Not over the side. You let lings puke in your lap all day long. It will clean up.

Chris, the rescuer, posts here sometimes. Maybe he'll pop in and talk about it.

Every one of these stories I see makes me happier for having done that rescue class.  Actually thinking of doing some practice this weekend at one of the EBRPD lakes.

When I first started kayaking I practiced self rescue at lake but always wondered if I could do it in the ocean.  Then that day came, when a huge swell flipped my kayak upside down.  I had to flip it over and jump back in while my friends helped stabilize my yak.  When I got back into my yak and continued fishing, I felt stoked knowing that "I can do it".

I made one of these for each of my kayaks.  They work great!

http://www.kayakselfrescueladder.com/

First, to help right the kayak, then as a 'step' to get my keester out of the water and in the kayak.  However, I actually prefer to get back in my Hobie PA14 from the back.  I pretend I'm a seal getting up on a dock, just pull myself onto the end, rest, then over the folded seat and back into my 'cockpit'.

I've used these in classes for folks and they do work well. A good suggestion!
