Hey folks,

I was out on a PB the other day,  the swell was a little lumpy, and I felt a little queasy. Doesn't happen much on the kayak, but on a different sort of craft...sucky. So, I was thinking that the Scopolamine patches work really well for me, with the only side effect being a bit of blurred vision. The problem is, those patches are like ten or fifteen bucks a pop, and though they work for several days, I don't always need that duration. So, I did some research, and it seems that the medication used to be available in tablet form, but is now off the market. Maybe available from your friendly Canadian Pharmacy.

I did call a local compounding pharmacy here in Santa Cruz, (Laudens) and they can make up the medication in the form of a gel (just a little dab behind the ear), so I'm going to give that a try. I think it will work out to be a buck or two per dose, and I'll have to give it a trial for efficacy. The formulation is Scopolamine Transdermal gel, .25 mg/.1ml.

I know there have been some previous threads on this subject, but I'm too lame to go searching for them. I thought I'd give out the information, and let anyone who knows more than I do chime in. Just don't suggest ginger, or pressure bands, or Grampa Phil's horseradish cure. I've tried the folk remedies. BTDT.

Tight lines,

Paul

keep us posted... I use the patch and have been cutting them in half.  For what its worth, they are a lifesaver from me getting seasick.

I've tried Scopolamine patches and the pills (when they were still available) but I didn't like the side effects.  Have you tried taking two Bonine the day before?  This is what works for me

it works for me.....you must get a compounding pharm to make it. like you said, no one is doing it anymore. there is a place in SF that makes it and sends it to your address.

any compounding pharmacy should be able to make capsules for you if you have you a prescription from your doctor.  I get a few each year by calling my doc at Kaiser and he sends the prescription right to the local pharmacy.

Hard part is finding a pharmacy that actually makes/blends med's like that.  Long gone are those days.  Now, most pharmacists just take pills from one bottle, count to 30, 60, 90, etc & place them in another bottle.

Just go online and search for "compounding pharmacy" near your home.  There are still many available.

My compounding pharmacy (Walgreens) is recently having a problem obtaining an ingredient for it. I wonder if the same thing goes for other compounding pharmacy. I talked to some doctors and pharmacist here at work if there's any comparable medication to Scopace and they couldn't come up with anything except Dramamine which I hate. One doctor told me to get one from Canada instead.

Like many of you I'm almost out of my Scopace pills.  While in Panama last year and asked a Pharmasist there, she sold me some Buscapina.  She said it was similar to scopamine.
You should be able to buy it in Mexico that's where the stuff is made.

I use the patch but cut it in half.
Put it behind the ear the night before going out and works good.
Full patch to strong and puts you to sleep
Also read up on diet and sea sickness. There is a lot to that diet stuff.
Some foods are known to cause sea sickness so why eat them before going out

My Dr. recommended a product called Gravol…used it for two weeks while fishing in Canada..worked better than dramamine and no drowsiness. You can find it on Amazon..make sure you read the dosage instructions

Just don't put it on a broomstick and ride it!  That stuff is a trip.  Arguably the basis for myths about witchcraft and werewolves . . . .

Cory,

As near as I can tell, Gravol is the same as Dramamine, and contains Benadryl. Benadryl is an antihistamine. This stuff makes me feel crappy and sleepy, which is why I'm looking for Scopolamine.

Happy that it works for you!
