Planning to fish in the bay next weekend and was wondering where people recommend launching from. I'm primarily looking at rock fish, but I keep hearing about halibut and striper. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thanks

You forgot San Pablo!

Sf and San Pablo will be stripers and halibut.  Google paradise pier park, Berkeley pier, alameda rock wall (encinal boat ramp), or oyster point.

You'll need to launch on the coast for rockfish. Right now it's open in sc/monterey  area.  I think it's gonna be another week or two before opening north of pigeon point.

Are you safety prepped for these launches?
..........agarcia is just an ex-kayaker

Rockfish will need to wait for a bit still in that bay. Season still closed.

Hi Bruddah,

I would not fish for rockfish in the SF Bay, certain varieties of fish have a high mercury content and should only be eaten sparingly. There is some kind of warning about eating fish caught in the Bay, I don't know who puts it out, maybe Fish and Game? But there is a chart that shows you which variety of fish is best to eat and how often.

If you want a great Fishing/topographical/launching sites and GPS coordinates map, I bought this plastic coated map of the entire Bay from the Carquinez Strait to Coyote Creek. It called San Pablo Bay/San Francisco Bay Fish-n-Map Co.
I bought it last year at Discount Mart's Bay Tackle in El Cerritto (5815 Cutting Blvd) 510-235-2032.
This is the best fishing map of the SF Bay that I have seen so far!!

Also, if you have not fished the Bay, you really have to pay close attention to the tides and wind. What may look very calm can get one caught in some pretty strong incoming and outgoing tides. Wind on the Bay is worst than paddling out in the open ocean.
Good luck,
Da Bruddah (Michael Y.) Oakland, CA
