I just got a OK M2XL and was searching for a fish finder. There are so many to choose from and I've been researching for the past few days but haven't read much of this model or the newer models with CHIRP. So far I've only taken the kayak to San Pablo Reservoir but looking to get into the SPB when time permits. I mostly go for perch, striper, halibut, and salmon from shore. We're not ready for the open blue yet since my wife and I are fairly new to fishing from a kayak but hoping we can get out there when we're more confident.

I came across this Lowrance Mark-4 HDI Fishfinder Chartplotter
http://www.basspro.com/Lowrance-Mark4-HDI-Fishfinder-Chartplotter/product/13091106262010/#desc-tab

I figured it was a pretty good deal having GPS and included DI transducer. Can anyone chime in on if this would be a good unit to start?

We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be.

I want to stay as close to the edge as I can without going over. Out on the edge you see all kinds of things you can't see from the center.

Makes for a good entry platform with LOTS of upgrade potential & here's why....

The mounting bracket in universal to the 4 & 5" units; color or B&W such as the Elite HDI & CHIRP units
The power cord in universal to the 4 & 5" units (actually All the current Elite Series from 4" to 9" AND HDS Series from 5" to 12"); color or B&W such as the Elite HDI & CHIRP units
The transducer in universal to the 4 & 5" units (actually All the current Elite Series from 4" to 9" AND HDS Series from 5" to 12"); color or B&W such as the Elite HDI & CHIRP units
...if you chose to REALLY go bigger or FASTER, all you have to change is the mounting bracket & you can go Elite 7/9 or any current HDS series unit.
...if you install this on a RAM mount ... the upgrade to the larger unit is even EASIER since you don't need to change out ANYTHING ... just attach it to the RAM mount ball. :smt002

based on this ... you can simply swap out the heads, later, if so desired to a larger, color screen fuller-featured unit without the need for replacement of bracket, cables & transducer.  During some of the tourneys we host, we also bring "loaner" units for people to try out & that installation is simply "snap it on the bracket & go".

At $129 ... that's less than buying the transducer and power cable by themselves!  WHAT A DEAL!!!!!
