So, when i bought my house, the previous owner left a bunch of stuff behind. Among some of the stuff i found this old conventional reel. Doesn't have any brand tagged on it. I haven't tried it yet, but it seems to work for what it is. It doesn't have any drag or anti reverse. The bait clicker does work, and the lever works. In freespool, it is still pretty smooth for something so old. Anyone have any idea what it is? I'd like to try it out on the water some day, if it doesn't have any drag, i might just end up making it a crab snare reel.

Wow that looks like a purpose built reel. steel line tuna reel? no drag! real Mans reel. that would be brutal with a big fish on line!!! Cool toy! Never seen one without a drag... thumb application to slow fish (blisters and bandages)

my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

I think that might be an old Jones Beach reel. Google it up.

Nice piece of history you've got there! (No idea what it's monetary value might be)

Drag = leather glove or man hands...

I was just about to post that link. I love the design of old fishing tackle. My grandpa recently passed away but left me this. Brand new in box Michell 386 from the early 60s if i remember correct, ive seen them go for $100.

I decided to use it,but is a bit loud and not very intuitive.

Ha! I think the sentimental value probably exceeds $30...

Load it up with some line and engage in some hand to hand combat with a big ling, drag free style. Sounds like fun!

As per my sig, I love me some old Mitchells.  Definitely loud, typically wobbly, and a bit counter to how modern reels behave, but a lot of fun.  Most of the weirdness centers around not being able to manually close the bail and many (but not all) of the models rotor heads spinning reverse of every other maker's.

That said, they're easy to service workhorses, and and for me hold a lot of sentimental value; I learned to fish with my grandparents who used nothing but silaflex rods and mitchell 300s.
14' Necky Dolphin, fast and wiggly, no room for anything.
Old Mitchell reel junkie.
