That is one beautiful bridge!

The old bridge has unique character and reflects the area's timber industry roots in a great way.

From my perspective, if it is still basically sound, it should be maintained and preserved. If it is rotting, perhaps replacement is in order.

If that is the verdict, I wonder if the design could be replicated in reinforced concrete, complete with cast-in wood grain?

The most intriguing  line from the article-
"There are more than 61,000 bridges in the United States that, like this one, are in need of repair. Plenty of cities would love a new bridge, but they are not Albion — a place where many of the residents moved in the 1960s to grow marijuana or to join lesbian and other communes, and where questioning authority is considered a civic duty."

Leave the bridge and build a round about.  That way they can keep the historical significance of the structure and maintain it at a level that doesn't take all that traffic.

Of course, a re-route will probably bypass the town altogether.

Would be a shame to see it go. Gotta be a PITA to maintain, though.

Definitely a cool bridge but noisy as hell when you are trying to sleep in the campground while cars are crossing it.

Would be a shame to lose it.

I would love to make some furniture from those old timbers. They probably wouldn't notice if i took one or two.
