While cleaning a large Cabazon I found a fish (with solid spikes coming from his head) eaten whole.  I also found an eel inside a Lingcod.  I am not familiar with either of these species and would like help identifying them for future reference.

I was trying to narrow it down and it looks like it could be a buffalo sculpin.

Monkeyfaced eel. Aka monkey faced prickleback. They are tasty if you ever catch one. I catch them poke pole fishing. Then again I could be wrong, but look up some pictures of that an see if it matches.

I looked at a lot of eels online and wasn't sure.  I was once told MFE were not up in Ft Bragg.  So the one eel I have seen while diving I thought it was a wolf eel or other species.  That's good to know they are here.  Going to try and find one next dive.  Makes me feel stupid for not researching it better before thinking they weren't here.

I don't think its an MFE, look at the head shape. Looks more like the related Rock Prickleback to me.

Interesting finds...

They look like a staghorn sculpin and either a black, or rock prickleback.

Could be the staghorn sculpin.  Thanks for the suggestions.  As for the eel some smaller ones look different than their adult species and the Internet pics range in colors and markings. So with a partially digested one that may be as good as an ID that I am going to get.  Still not sure how the sculpin made it all the way into the belly without getting those spikes stuck or cutting it open. They are sharp and not flexible.

No doubt in my mind: definitely buffalo sculpuin (Enophrys bison) and black prickleback (Xiphister atropurpureus).

There are monkeyface pricklebacks up in Fort Bragg, especially around the harbor, though there are more black pricklebacks.

I found a wolf eel in a ling 2014...It smelled So bad bro.....toss my lunch right then...so bad

if I ever feel something in them again it is getting slit right there at the ocean..by the time I got it home and cut open, the full bag of working on eel, stomach acid -had turned part of the ling fillet soft and gross

Agreed, buffalo sculpin is my guess for the top one. I've caught a couple of them while fishing swimbaits.

Back in the late 80's my dad fished a staghorn sculpin (we called them "bullheads") as live bait and landed a 20" Sand Bass. When we netted it the bass was hooked only on the horns of the sculpin, but it was solidly hooked. Took a few minutes to remove the bait, which was released :smt005

Fillet first, then check the stomach. Stomach acid, and even freshwater, are never a good thing for fillets.

On a staghorn sculpin the horns have 2-3 little teeth pointing backwards, hence the "stag" horn.
