La Jolla Kayak Fishing
Everyone’s Kayak Fishing Tournament 2007

With the growth of the sport of kayak fishing there has been a tremendous increase in the number of kayak fishing tournaments. There are tournaments all over the country, fresh and salt water, for bass, red fish, or yellowtail, you name it there is likely a tournament for it. Tournaments may be one day, a couple of days or even the entire year. The one constant is that the people who fish a lot or that catch the biggest fish are always the winners.

At La Jolla Kayak Fishing we wanted to do things a bit different by giving as many people as possible, fishing any type of water for any species of fish the chance to win a prize from our great sponsors. A catch and release bay bass angler has as much opportunity to win as a big game kayak angler.

There is no entry fee; Entrants need only submit photos of their fish, along with the weight. The photo will also need to include an item, designated at the beginning of each month, such as pliers, your hat, the OK sign or some other item to be eligible. Just as a warning at some point during the year a LJKF sticker will be the designated photo item, so make sure you have one on hand.

We want as many people to participate and have the chance to win as possible so the winners will be somewhat random.
At the end of each month we will randomly pick that months target species and which place fish will actually be the winner.
In other words after all fish have been submitted for the month we will draw from all of the submitted species to determine which of those species was the target or prize fish for the month. We will then roll a dice to determine which fish of that species is the winner. i.e. if we roll a 4 the forth largest fish of that species will win the prize of the month. So we could have the sixth largest Bay bass or the second largest White Seabass be the winner for the month.

Species submitted could be any legal sport fish from any region, anything from
Yellowtail to Trout, from Tuna to Bay bass, just make sure you catch it from a kayak.

The winner from each month as well as the person who catches the largest fish each month will go into a drawing for the year end top prize, a three night stay for two including kayak rental at the Hotel Punta Colorada, courtesy of Van Wormer Resorts, plus two pair of Maui Jim Sunglasses.

The winner each month will receive a pair of Maui Jim sunglasses and another great prize from one of our other sponsors, Lamiglas fishing rods, ExtraSport, Surf to Summit, or Werner paddles.

Tournament begins January 1 2007 and ends December 31 2007

14.   Target species will be determined by placing the name of each species submitted, for that month, into a hat and drawing from those.

17.   Only fish caught from a kayak are eligible to win

Given the rules, I imagine pretty well.  From what I understand of the rules a combination of rules 1, 14, and 15 should weigh heavily in favor of someone supmitting many different fish that no one else enters.
Quote
...
3.     You may submit as many different species per month as you like, but only one submission per species.
...
14.   Target species will be determined by placing the name of each species submitted, for that month, into a hat and drawing from those.
15.   The winning placement will be determined by a roll of a dice. In the event a placement is rolled that does not correspond to a species/placement submitted we would re roll until a time that a winner is determined.
...

Most of the contestants will be from SoCal where Jim runs his website.  While there are a lot of species that could be caught in SoCal, I'm guessing that on a given month a dozen or so species might be submitted, and most of the entries will be the classic SoCal kayak sportfish (kelp bass, spotted bay bass, halibut, yellowtail, white seabass, maybe a few others as well as some largemouth bass and rainbow trout from the freshwater side of things).   A majority of the entries will be competeing among themselves hoping that their species is picked and that their placement is picked (e.g. 5th largest halibut)

Anyone who is able to submit a bunch of unique species that no one else has entered will have a distinct advantage in terms of odds.  All they have to do is hope that their species is picked (the more species you enter the better) and then rule 15 applies which means Jim re-rolls until he rolls a "1" for first place in your category which you will have by being the unique entry for that species.

Personally, I like this aspect of the rules becuase it should also favor us NorCal anglers.  Well, it will once our rockfishing season (lots of species) reopens again in July :(

Yep, they don't have dinos, but better yet, once rockfish season opens we can go out and pickup a dozen species easy that they don't have in SoCal.   Of course, I've now given away my secret... oh well as long as NorCal wins a few.

The tournament starts January 1 2007, please include a photo of your fish which must include your fishing pliers. Please give us the weight and length also.
Entries must be placed in the proper month, all others are locked so it should not be too tough.
