That's a monster fsh for sure but that boat did most of the work if it only took 30 mins to land.

Wonder if he got any of it. I read somewhere that the boat keeps the fish in HI.

Is that true?

I asked about this when I visited Maui last summer. Didn't end up booking a trip.

Short story is that yes, the boat keeps the fish. Most "trophies" are released.

When fish are kept, the boat captains sell off the catch to help "cover costs" (i.e. continue ripping off tourists). One I spoke to said he would send clients home with enough fish to fix dinner for their family, but no more than that.

I didn't get a good vibe from the captains I spoke to. It felt like all they cared about was my wallet... So I kept walking...

Bout 12 years ago my dad and I took a charter boat out of Honolulu. Each got 2 wahoo and just before heading home I got this white (I think) marlin. Not a trophy by marlin standard but by far the biggest fish I've ever caught. The captain and first mate were both good fun guys to spend time on the water with. They were both part timers as a charter boat though.

Was as mentioned. They gave us a few pounds of marlin steaks and a fillet of wahoo and sold the rest. Our dinner that night was fabulous. Grilled out with some butter garlic and seasoning rubs.

I figure most of us main-landers aren't going to want the hassle and cost of flying that much fish home. But as I recall that meal, maybe we do.
