What's up guys?

I've been brainstorming about how to install my downrigger, and stumbled across these gems:

I had a picture of this thing in my head, and just knew it had to exist somewhere. Indeed it does...

Seems like these could be a great option for adding sturdy, waterproof, corrosion resistant threaded anchor points. Just attach with a couple rivets or bolts and a little GOOP and you've got a solid anchoring point.

Seems like this could open up endless possibilities for kayak rigging.

They are available here, along with all kinds of other neat toys:

Enjoy!

Where are you thinking of mounting your downrigger?

It'll end up looking similar to this, but with a bolted down Starboard mounting platform instead of the wood plug setup. (Photo is from Nangusdog over at NWKA)

I already modified the downrigger by switching the brake level to the other side (rotated 180 degrees). Now it's within easy reach without interfering with the . I can explain that modification of anyone is interested.

I browsed that site last night, there's some pretty cool stuff! Nice find Alex.

Out of curiosity, where are you going to have the rod--same side as the DR or on the starboard?

I've already got a Power Lock rod holder that sits on my starboard rail with the rod stretching over my knees, line dangling down on port side.

I like this over-the-knees setup for the rod holder because it keeps my line dangling closer to the gunwale (less neck strain to watch the tip, and less side pulling leverage).

10-32 would be an awfully small screw.

What made you abandon your crate mount?

10-32 is the exact size and thread count of mounting bolts that come with the Scotty 1050. They are small, but plenty strong.

What made you abandon your crate mount?

I took my kayak out to the back "lawn" the other day and fully rigged it up with the milk crate and downrigger. Then I pretended I was fishing...

*Within seconds, I could tell that having the DR directly behind me was going to be a royal pain in the neck (literally and figuratively).

* I wouldn't be able to continue pedaling while raising or lowering the DR. This could lead to tangles, etc.

* The brake lever was sticking forward and located just about square between my shoulder blades. It's a really awkward place to reach back to.

* Even sitting side saddle (which I prefer to avoid in the first place), cranking the DR in that position was awkward at best. I've got long arms, and it put me in an awkward cramped position while cranking.

* I like to check my baits about every 15-20 minutes. If I troll for 6 hours , that would  mean raising and lowering the DR about 24 times. That's about 1000 revs of the crank handle if I'm fishing about 40 feet down. 1000 cranks in an awkward position didn't sound fun at all.

Luckily the crate mount didn't cost me anything and I can still reuse the same Starboard I scored for free from Tap Plastics.

The crate with lid is pretty neat anyway. It might stay.

I'm quite curious about this. I'm trying to figure out where to mount the DR on my Revo. I was going to mount it on a yak attack blackpak, but I'm willing toisten to all ideas.

I used a Scotty Round Flush mount and installed it in the Revo Cup Holder; I also put a plate underneath it to re-enforce it, which was real easy to access from the center hatch.

Then I used the Scotty 4" extension with the Scotty Lake Troller to raise it high enough to clear the rail; easy to deploy and recover DR weight...

Think I have a pic posted somewhere of the install... but too lazy to go hunt it down; maybe will retake one if needed.

You could accomplish the same thing by sandwiching a stainless t-nut (aka "tee nut") between a couple scrap pieces of starboard gooped together. A stainless t-nut is about $3 at West Marine.

The advantages of such an approach might include the following.

1) Allows for arbitrary placement (and size) of the bolts used to attach it to the kayak.
2) Better pull-thru resistance.
3) You could easily create a flush mount. That is, the t-nut could protrude just far enough to be flush with the top of the kayak (as opposed to being buried below the plastic of the kayak), giving a much more professional appearance.
4) No cadmium (nasty stuff) or other surface coating to worry about.

If you want to see pictures, let me know. I've got all the parts here and would be glad to put an illustrative example together.

The narrow rail on the Revo (or Adventure/Revo 16, which is what I've got) makes it more difficult to forward mount a DR. Here's my solution, which is just a slight variation on the one from pmmpete on the NWKA group that AlexB mentioned:

http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=53335.msg600957

I generally leave the base installed even when not using the DR. It doesn't get in the way of anything I need to do.
