From Lake Chabot's website: http://www.ebparks.org/parks/lake_chabot#activities

Swimming is not permitted in Lake Chabot. The reservoir was built in 1874-75 as a primary water source for the East Bay and remained closed for 91 years. Legislation passed in the 1960s opened the lake for controlled recreational uses such as fishing and non-water-contact boating. Currently, the lake serves as a standby emergency water supply. Visitors are asked to observe regulations that keep the waters pure.

So humans are not allowed to touch the water because it is a source of drinking water. But it is ok for dogs to go into the water? WTF? :smt102

Human diseases get transmitted to other humans. There are very few diseases that can be transmitted from dog to human.

Most dogs don't pee in the water. Humans aren't so smart.

I didn't see this thread so I asked about it in another forum. I had planned on going there soon, it's only 20 minutes from me. After I do my Quarry Lakes run and get my yak situated I guess I'll skip Chabot and go to Del Valle.

I am less concerned about urine than stool getting into the water. That is how the parasites listed above are excreted from the body.

Dogs usually don't do that in the water either. Humans...not so predictable. :O

According to today's Contra Costa Times, swimming and wading by people and dogs has always been prohibited at Chabot.  The article stated that guts should be removed before cooking and consuming fish.  Does anybody not remove the guts before eating trout?  It also states that fishermen should wash their hands after making contact with the water.  It seems to me that avoiding this lake would be the smart thing to do.

After sticking my arm in up to my shoulder yesterday into a rattlesnake den to get a crippled wood duck for Cody, pretty sure sticking my hands in Chabot is minimal.  :smt006

Having caught one planter trout there last year on a total of 10-12 trips, the toxic algae is only one of multiple reasons this is true.

That said this is on my wife's roster of running spots, so I'm glad to have heard this before she takes the dog out there again (not that we let the dogs in the water, but...)
